WASHINGTON - The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin E. Dempsey joined Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta Thursday in expressing unhappiness with Pakistan’s progress in battling the Haqqani network’s use of safe havens in Pakistan.
Pakistan is working to battle other threats within the federally administered tribal area, or FATA, Dempsey told reporters.
“Although we are extraordinarily dissatisfied with the effect that Pakistan has had on the Haqqani network, we are also mindful that they are conducting military operations, at great loss elsewhere,” Dempsey said.
Regional Command East, which includes Khost and Logar provinces, has seen an uptick in activity, largely due increased activity by the Haqqani network, Dempsey said.
The Haqqani network is as big a threat to Pakistan as it is to Afghanistan and the United States, Dempsey said. He added that the US will continue to work with Pakistan to find common ground on ways to deal with the cross-border threat posed by the Haqqani network and other groups.
In addition to the recent activity by the Haqqani network, Dempsey said al-Qaida remains a threat in Pakistan, particularly within the FATA, and to a lesser extent within Afghanistan. Coalition efforts have been very successful in eliminating al-Qaida leaders, though others continue to take their place, he added.
Dempsey cited the June 4 death of Abu Yahya Al-Libi, al-Qaida's second in command, as an example of those successes, calling it a significant loss for the terror group.
“He had long-standing credibility and he had operational skills that are tough to grow overnight, and so that will be something that affects the al-Qaida network globally, not just in south Asia,” Dempsey said.
“Most of those who 10 years ago we began tracking are no longer a part of al-Qaida, they’re no longer part of any organization,” Dempsey said. “We are at war with al-Qaida and we will pursue them wherever we find them,” he said.

Exactly, mushy even offered for surveillance cameras and border fences at Durand line but US refused to do so as it would thwart their plans of making Pakistan scapegoat of every attack in Afghanistan. I can not understand that despite state of the art drone and space technology, why US can not even manage to capture one single image of Taliban/ Haqqani Network while crossing the border from Pakistan side??????

Safe havens!!!??? You have drones man. You go in unopposed. Why dont you just drone the safe havens? Its because none exist. You just want to find an excuse for the spectacular failure that your occupation of Afghanistan is!

You and your Pentagon boss are extremely funny. Didn't know war is such a funny business run by clowns!

You have resources at your disposal that all the world combined will envy. You have financial resources that you can wage several wars at one time and still be not drained out. But if you cant win a war or achieve your objectives, then please dont blame the neighbors! You did the same in Vietnam and its neighbors Laos and Cambodia. You kept blaming those poor countries for your failures. You left thousands of dead in a fruitless, useless war.

Dont worry. You will find another weak country to invade and occupy after Afghanistan. And then you will do the same there.

Just back to your country and please learn to tell truth as well. It hurts but not as much as your constant lies.

Maybe CENTCOM can convey my message to Dempsey, take some ecstasy and enjoy the night!!!

I am surprised they have not used the adjective mortified.

It's a season of disappointments, I guess!

* European economies not doing enough to shore up their banking system - We're disappointed.
* China increases spending on it's "self defense" budget - We're disappointed.
* Chinese clout growing in the South China Sea - We're disappointed.
* Chinese selling more telecom and high-end electronics, at cheaper rates to Europeans - We're disappointed.
* India not buying our expensive / tagged / obsolete war-planes - We're disappointed.
* India off-shoring all our jobs excluding burger flippin at McDonald's - We're disappointed.
* India forcing us to sign the NLL (Nuclear Liability Law), after all we've done for them (ungrateful minions) - We're disappointed.
* Europeans not buying Boeing products - We're disappointed.
* Europeans sidelining American construction / financial / PR firms - We're disappointed.
* Russia does not appreciate our hegemonic "defense shield" - We're disappointed.
* Our banks and financial institutions being "down-lettered" by S&P, Moody's and Fitch - How come, f*****g hell, don't they work for us? - We're disappointed.

However, retard A-Rabs listening to most of our dictates, we're moderately fine, but not at all happy. :D

What a dissatisfied and disappointed nation. I think instead of bitching at the rest of the world - which means not America (for American audience here), US Congress needs to take a one month hiatus and every senator needs to go see a psychiatrist. (Minus Dempsey and Panetta - Both of these individuals need to be prescribed high dose sedatives and immediately admitted to a looney-bin)

Drones, Drift and the (New) American Way of War | Waq al-Waq | Big Think

maybe the good General ought to heed the advise in the above ‘link’ because it is only leading to what mentioned below…

“the mission is drifting toward a circle of self-perpetuating, self-justifying futility. This pattern is not new, however. The same rationale has been used to justify the prolonged engagement in the Af/Pak region.
Accompanying any discussion of a pull-back of US forces from the ******* region are warnings that the withdrawal of our troops will destabilize Pakistan, and that we must continue to press the military campaign in order to contain the militant groups operating in that locale. Missing from that analysis - as with the analysis of the Yemen campaign and, in large part, the Iraq war before it - is an acknowledgement that our presence alone, and the use of military strikes in connection therewith, is itself a radicalizing, militarizing and motivating factor. For example, Pakistan has been destabilized, not made more secure, by our Afghan campaign, so it is dubious to conclude that our continued presence in its current form will serve to ameliorate a problem that it has only exacerbated to date.”
