Theory. Pakistan industry is busy supplying domestic consumers. Industry does not have spare capacity to offer international markets.

My theory is based on people buying local products due to imports are more expensive.

Yeah a rising population requires more imports, reduces the exportable surplus as @Type59 pointed out, keeps income levels low, keeps unemployment high and ensures that the poor stay poor because they are the ones that subscribe to this line of thinking.

The other aspect of this extremism is the terrorist acts that keep taking place. Don't you think that has an impact on the economy? Bomb blasts going off every so often. People dying in the mosques and marketplaces of the country. The security situation is quite the horror show. This despite a record defence budget.

There's also the general thuggery that now passes for religious observance in Pakistan. People getting lynched on the streets because someone suspects them of blasphemy. Even provincial governors aren't safe from such thugs.
