detail of the journey
In order to reach Eielson Air Force Base, after taking off from the airforce base in Jamnagar, the twelve aircraft of the Indian Air Force made a halt in Bahrain, another one at the air base Borg El Arab in Egypt, a third at the air base 125 Istres in France and a fourth at the Beja airbase in the south of Portugal, before crossing the Atlantic ocean to reach a fifth and final stopover in Canada.
The first group arrived, consisting of an Il-78 (call sign: TITAN 1) and four Su-30MKI (call sign: TITAN 2, 3, 4, and 5), landed at Istres air base at 15:30 local time. The second group, consisting of the second and last Il-78 (call sign: ASTRA 1) and four Jaguar (call sign: ASTRA 2, 3, 4, and 5) reached around 19:45 local time. The delay of the latter group was due to poor weather conditions before the departure from Egypt. One C-17 reached first before the Su-30MKI group and the second C-17 reached last, after the four Jaguars.
Takeoffs were held the next day with a C-17 first, a little before 12:00, followed by four Su-30MKI at 12:20 and quickly joined by the Il-78 that accompanied them. Jaguars, meanwhile, took off around 12:50, before being joined by their Il-78.
