Faced with a huge delay in acquiring world-class rifles for its soldiers, the Army is now reluctantly planning to induct the indigenously developed Excalibur, an assault rifle it had initially rejected, though in limited numbers.

The fully automatic rifle, which fires 5.56mm ammunition built by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), is an upgraded version of the trouble-prone INSAS (Indian National Small Arms System) inducted in the mid-1990s.

Army sources said that with the procurement delays in mind, the force is looking to induct the Excalibur to replace the INSAS till the time a new rifle joins the force.

“The Army has shown interest in a modified form of Excalibur. The exact number and time frame has not yet been intimated by the Army,” the Public Relations Officer of the OFB told The Hindu in response to a query.

The Army has been trying to replace the INSAS and had launched an ambitious global tender for interchangeable barrels capable of firing both 5.56mm and 7.62mm calibre bullets. After extensive trials, the tender was cancelled early this year as none of the contenders could meet the requirements.

The Army has now decided to go for 7.62mm calibre and fresh General Staff Quality Requirements (GSQR) have just been issued.

The Excalibur was comprehensively evaluated at Infantry School, Mhow, in November 2005 and recommended for induction in the Army in due course of time, the PRO said. But the Army later did not show interest in its induction, which has changed in light of the procurement delays.

However before induction, the Army wants to carry out extensive user exploitation trails to validate the rifle.

Sources said that to save time and shorten the process, the Army intended to procure large volume of the guns to carry out simultaneous trials in various locations.

The Rifle Factory, Ishapore, had produced 15 prototypes for user and quality evaluation, and additional features sought by the user are to be incorporated. However, the OFB is yet to receive any communication for large volumes for exploitation trails, sources said.

It is always a welcome for Indian armed forces to induct indigenous products and a moment which we should cherish. Indian Army should go with the indigenously developed assault rifles rather than going for a foreign rifle and wasting millions in foreign exchange. The govt should negate IA's love for foreign maal as most of the IA's top brass select foreign products in favor of commissions and kickbacks. I'm sure if India's DRDO, ADA, OFBs and other such organizations made huge advancements in various complicated technologies, they could easily make a damn good rifle but IA has always been rejecting indigenous products as they won't get any commissions. If IA is still not satisfied, DRDO/Rifle factories should hire a foreign consultant and make necessary changes to the Excalibur & MCIWS accordingly and supply it in large numbers to the armed forces. The production could be handed over to private Indian entities as they have a far better record of producing qualitative products with lower tolerances along with high precision and accuracy. Strict export control laws and supervision should be imposed on the private firms so that they won't sell those guns to general public. India never had a gun culture and government should make sure it remains that way.

The Indian Army (IA) plans to temporarily induct locally developed Excalibur assault rifles into service until it shortlists a 7.62x39 mm rifle for import over the next few years, sources told IHS Jane's on 24 October.

Officials said the IA recently asked the state-run Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) to supply an unspecified 'large number' of prototype Excalibur rifles to conduct simultaneous testing at various locations around the country to hasten the Excalibur's induction.

"Keeping procurement delays in mind, the army has opted to provisionally employ Excalibur for its infantry and specialised counter-insurgency units, which desperately need an assault rifle," military analyst Lieutenant General Vijay Kapoor (retd) told IHS Jane's .

Ugly looking weapon, wonder how it performs.

.
I hope it gets through. Excellibar will be a major improvement over INSAS. In the end , even a small advantage if our soldiers can get from this new gun, purpose will becserved.

. . .
I am sorry but we in India do not send our weapons for beauty contest. Its ugly and bad @$$
should be enough to kill the enemy standing in front of him
Type-56 kitted out will probably be more effective than this piece of junk, I assume it was manufactured by DRDO then I can say with almost certainty it is junk.Kudos chaps

2 stoppages per 24,000 rounds is near world class. I can understand how you feel, but learn to live with reality, it would make you feel a lot better as time progresses and No, Excalibur is not manufactured by DRDO.

I wonder how many kickbacks were involved in convincing folks that their were only 2 stoppages lol......as a Pakistani patriot I can assure you I wish this weapon is inducted as the mainstream weapon of the entire Hindian security forces.Kudos

It was a global tender, Excalibur competed against, US,Russian and Italian weaponry and came out to be the only contender to have neared the specifications of the Army. You may wish for your doom as a matter of choice..

The specifications and the caliber has been so drafted in the present RFI that Excalibur cannot compete and because of this delay an interim order was given.

Wow! Those are the tiniest Picatinny rails I've ever seen.
Maybe they were made that short so the name could be
changed to Pica-tiny and avoid copyright issues?:flame:?

Oh well, Small is beautiful, I guess!

Fun day all, Tay.

Yes, It was pitched against Beretta ARX 160, CZ-805 BREN, IMI Galil ACE 1, Colt M4 and SIG SG551 in temperatures ranging -50 to 50 degree Celsius, Excalibur triumphed where the aforementioned failed to clear.
