Former foreign minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed has called on neighbouring India to use military intervention to restore democratic rule in the Maldives.

In a series of tweets sent on Friday and Sunday, Shaheed, who serves as the UN’s special rapporteur to Iran, insisted that the Maldives must be suspended from the Commonwealth.

"CMAG must suspend the Maldives from CW [and] request India to invoke R2P!" Shaheed urged in a tweet.

The Responsibility to Protect (R2P or RtoP) is a United Nations initiative established in 2005. R2P focuses on preventing and halting four crimes: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing, which it places under the generic umbrella term of mass atrocity crimes.

Shaheed also urged parliament speaker Abdulla Shahid to invite India and Commonwealth to restore constitutional authority in the Maldives.

Shaheed who had served as foreign minister for former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed said, "I wud much prefer secular Indian Army to Mullah-fed MNDF! Say NO to jihadis n takfiris!"

His tweets relate to the Supreme Court injunction delaying the second round of presidential elections until the court rules in the vote rigging case filed by Jumhoory Party (JP).

JP's Gasim Ibrahim, who lost in the first round of elections held September 7, is seeking annulment of the first round.
