What's new

European union banned PIA(Pakistan Airlines)

There will be a severe shortage of commercial pilots in India, if you get the licence now you'll only have to make 350-500 hrs a year to keep it.
See it as in investment for the future.

And ofcourse once your private business expands, you'll fly your own learjet or BBJ. :partay:

Thanks a lot Neo, I got couple of months to make a decision!!!!! We might actually run in to each other, if not atleast for the love of hashbrownies

the pilots of 57 air lines were trained at pia training centre in karachi in early 90's. But our great beurocrats even sold pia routes to singapore airlines...emirates wanted to invest in pakistan but government could not allow competition as pia cannot survive..the managment is a problem as pia is over employed thanks to benazir bhutto..pia can never be succesful until it is sold to some other airline as the recent managment cannnot meet international standards when they know this has happened so many times..pia cannot maintain its planes what can it to with the four star hotel it owns in america..one most important thing pia can do is to cut the salary of its ceo from rs 3 million per month to 1 million this will be an automatic save of rs24 million every year...the manahment of emirates airlines is run by british airways..but how can pia make such big downsizing

PIA mulls leasing planes as ban looms

KARACHI: PIA is considering leasing passenger planes and crew because of a looming European Union ban on its fleet over safety concerns, said PIA officials. On Friday an EU source said that all but seven of PIA’s 42 planes would be barred from landing in the EU. A PIA statement said the airline was unaware of any expected ban, although officials said Pakistan’s embassy in Brussels had informed the airline of the impending ban. Technical fitness of aircraft, airworthiness and other cabin specific issues were discussed in three days of talks between PIA and EU air safety officials that ended on Friday, said PIA. “They appreciated PIA’s efforts towards excellent maintenance standards and airworthiness,” it said. “We can acquire new aircraft on wet lease similar to what we do every year for Haj operations,” said a senior PIA official.

Musharraf may talk to EU leaders on PIA

By Sarfaraz Ahmed

KARACHI: President Gen Pervez Musharraf is expected to talk directly to European leaders if the European Union bans Pakistan International Airline’s fleet from operating in the bloc.

“Musharraf and the prime minister will be required to speak to at least some key EU leaders if the airline’s efforts fail to yield results,” sources told Daily Times on Saturday. They said the airline would send a letter to the EU Air Safety Committee to ask it to clarify whether such a decision had been made. About the response to contacts the management had made following a report that claimed all but seven aircraft of the PIA fleet would be banned, they said attempts for this purpose had been fruitless, “as Saturdays and Sundays are not working days in West”.

Asked what possibly could have prompted the decision to ban all but seven aircraft, the sources said this could be a ploy to pressure Pakistan into buying European planes. They said the decision to allow only the Boeings might have been made as challenging an American product would have landed the EU in trouble. They said the EU was also possibly looking at minimising the PIA fleet’s presence because of a recent surge in terrorism in Pakistan.

PIA fleet will not be banned from flying to EU: CAA

By Ali Waqar

LAHORE: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said on Saturday that no ban would be imposed on the Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) fleet in the European Union, and the airline’s aircraft would continue operating in the bloc after March 8.

Replying to a question about international organisations’ objections to PIA Boeings and air buses and the CAA stance on the subject, CAA Deputy Director General Vice Marshal Muhammad Safdar Khan said the CAA was satisfied with the PIA Boeings and air buses.

He was talking Daily Times after a conference of regional countries’ civil aviation associations in Lahore. He said the CAA believed that PIA’s international fleet was okay for operations. He said the authority was aware of the whole situation, and he attended a meeting in Brussels of the EU Air Safety Commission on February 22, where a PIA and CAA team made a successful presenatation.

He said the fleet’s operations in the bloc would continue after March 8, but certain quarters were trying to exploit the situation.

“I especially went to attend that meeting after the rising controversy on the issue,” he said. He conceded that the PIA fleet had some “small operational or technical faults”, but said the CAA knew about these problems, and the situation was being improved. “The CAA has occasionally stopped some aircraft from flying, but that happens only for two to three days because of technical problems.”

The CCA deputy director general said EU countries had been contacted to tell them that they should first consult the CAA on such issues.

According to reports on Friday, senior officials at the Pakistan High Commission in London told the PIA headquarters in Karachi that the EU would bar all PIA aircraft, except for Boeing 777s, from flying in the bloc after March 8 because of safety concerns. The reports said the decision was made in Brussels, where the Air Safety Commission’s meeting was held.

Germany bans PIA’s A310s and 747s?

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Republic of Germany has cast the first stone against the Pakistan International Airlines by banning its Airbus A310 and Boeing 747 aircraft from landing in Frankfurt, forcing PIA to cancel its flight PK761 today from Islamabad to Frankfurt via Istanbul and back via the same route. PIA sources told Daily Times that PK761 would fly to Istanbul at the scheduled departure time from Islamabad, and return to Islamabad the following day without going on to Frankfurt. It was learnt that PIA’s flights to Paris might also be affected shortly. Meanwhile, it has been found that PIA has been making efforts to legally defend itself against an anticipated EU decision to ban all but seven of its aircraft. PIA is also planning s alternative routes to North America.

PESHAWAR (March 02 2007): German ambassador, Dr Gunter Mulick , on Thursday confirmed that the European Union (EU) was going to allow only 777 Boeing, latest aircraft into EU destinations from next week. The decision is not only against PIA as it would also affect those other airlines, which will not fulfil the required standard. It would even hit the airlines of some European countries.

Talking to newsmen here at the office of GTZ, German Technical Support, the ambassador of Germany, which is currently holding the office of EU president said the union had already warned PIA for bringing improvement in its fleet, but it had failed to fulfill the requirement. "From next month the EU countries would allow only 777 aircraft, which are technically in better conditions," the German ambassador added.

The German ambassador said that the volume of bilateral trade between Germany and Pakistan last year was $2 billion. However, he said that the signing of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both countries would take some time. He said that a meeting of the joint commission of both countries is scheduled for May this year after a gap of one decade.

He said that Germany has given an assistance of $ 2.5 billion in various sectors and for relief and rehabilitation of the earthquake affected districts of NWFP and Azad Kashmir.

The meeting of joint commission, he said would discuss matters like how to improve economic and trade relations between both countries. But, he said that they would like to go step by step and a time would ultimately that both countries would sign the FTA.

Dr Gunter Mulick during his visit also held meetings with office bearers of Sarhad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) and Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry (WCCI) and discussed matters on promotion of business relations between Pakistani and chambers in Germany.

He said that NWFP required the creation of job opportunities to prevent youth from disappointment and depression and falling victims to radicalism.

Germany and Pakistan, he said are also enjoy good political relations and we are further promoting these friendly relations in form of extending technical support.

Regarding the role of Germany in the reconstruction drive in Afghanistan, he said that they had given assistance of 800 million Euros to Afghanistan and had deployed forces in Northern Afghanistan for restoration of peace. He said that they also appreciate the role of Pakistan in bringing normalcy in Afghanistan, saying that more than 1.5 million Afghan refugees are still present in Pakistan.

The German ambassador said that they are for adopting joint-border-security management system along Pak-Afghan border to use it for the promotion of trade rather than infiltration of terrorist elements. He praised the efforts made by the government of Pakistan in this regard.

He said that Germany is friend of both Pakistan and Afghanistan and supports both countries in the development of their economies and education sectors. He said that a German Technical University would be established in Lahore to quality European standard higher education to Pakistani student.

PIA shares EU ban story with public

KARACHI (March 04 2007): The current developments as a result of the EU proposed action against PIA's flights to the EU would understandably be of concern to Pakistanis in general and its customers in particular. Accordingly, PIA wishes to share with them the complete and full factual position in this context so that they have a better appreciation of PIA's position in the matter.

In an emergency meeting convened at PIA's request at the EU Air Transport Headquarters Brussels on 2nd March, 2007, PIA's team being personally led by its Chairman & CEO, accompanied by Pakistan's ambassador in Brussels, the Deputy DC CAA and PIA's legal Advisors held extensive discussions lasting over three hours. In the course of which a detailed presentation was made by the Chairman, who explained the several additional measures that PIA had embarked upon, (even before the EU saga began), to make PIA more focused on safety, customer needs, reliability and vision for the future. This includes fleet modernisation, spinning off non-core businesses (such as hotels) and formation of joint ventures with internationally reputable companies for ramp handling, flight kitchen, maintenance, repair, overhaul and engineering (MRQ), (the latter being in process of finalisation), to name a few.

In this meeting, the EU's ASC top representatives duly appreciated the efforts of PIA in this context and were at pains to emphasise that PIA's operations in EIJ countries are not banned, but only operating restrictions are being temporarily applied. These are aircraft specific (B-747s and A-310s only), to enable PIA to carry out certain further measures. This vindicates PIA's flight standards and allied processes, which facilitate the continued operations of all of its state of the art B777s aircraft, maintained and operated by PIA. Indeed, the Chairman pointed out at the meeting that as the facts will show, PIA had a better safety record than even certain major European Airlines and considered this action of EU discriminatory against PIA.

PIA gives top priority to air safety and conforms to the requisite maintenance practices and standards for its fleet. This is borne out by its safety record during its over 50 years history. PIA also continues to maintain and service the aircraft of other international operators in different parts of the world including the EU.

PIA's aircraft are certified for airworthiness by CAA Pakistan, which under Article 33 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention of 1944) shall be recognised as valid. The other Contracting States provided that the requirements under which such Certificates or licences are issued or rendered valid are equal to or above the minimum standards which may be established from time to time, pursuant to the Chicago Convention. PIA not only fulfils that, hut is subject to CAA's oversight, which itself complies with the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and was cleared by ICAO during the last Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (IUSOAP).

PIA's Maintenance and Engineering Department is certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). HA is also currently registered by IATA through its' Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), being amongst the 63 Airlines out of 300 Airlines to have achieved this distinction. Major NA Departments also have ISO 9000 Certification. In this background, PIA's aircraft are eligible to fly and indeed fly to most parts of the world without any let or hindrance whatsoever.

The European Union (EU) have only a year back (December 2005) introduced certain more stringent air safety criteria for aircraft using airspace of its member countries and have already blacklisted over 100 Airlines operators by imposing ban on their operations in the EU countries. EU' s said Regulations in this context (air safety), are still evolving and its procedures and precedents for evaluating airlines are not widely known, with resultant potential for miscommunications and misperceptions, which has substantially contributed to PIA's current situation.

In the last quarter of 2006, EU raised issues regarding PIA's certain aircraft, in which respect PIA fully co-operated with EU's Air Safety Committee (EU'S ASC) and established an Action Plan with clear milestones duly endorsed by CAA and accepted by EU's ASC. PIA made presentations before EU's ASC in October and November 2006 and February 2007, during which EU's ASC duly acknowledged the significant further measures that PIA had taken to comply with EU's more stringent air safety criteria.

Accordingly, the EU action to place restrictions on PIA's certain aircraft, first reported through the media, came as a total surprise and was clearly not in keeping with the recognised progress that PIA had made to meet EU' s air safety criteria.

PIA strongly disagrees with EU's proposed action and on the given facts does not consider it to be justifiable in its application on HA. However, recognising the sovereignty of the EU to determine its' Regulations for compliance by Airline operators in its member countries, PIA without prejudice to its rights, agreed to seek an amicable resolution of the matter,

At the end of the aforesaid meeting, PIA reiterated its commitment and resolve to adhere to the highest flight safety standards and shared with EU's ASC officials PIA's determination to work with them for restoration of full operations in the EU countries in the shortest possible time, in which respect they have been assured of EU's ASC co-operation.

Meanwhile, PIA has already undertaken measures to mitigate the effect of this operation, restriction in the EU countries and assures its customers that it will endeavour to minimise any dislocation and resultant inconvenience that may be caused to them and further assures them that it would continue to provide them safe and reliable air travel.

‘PIA restricted not barred from EU’

KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), on Saturday, claimed that European Union’s Air Safety Committee had said that PIA had not been banned from operating in European Union countries. The airline’s spokesperson said that ‘operating restrictions’ had been imposed on its ageing Boeing 747s and Airbus 310 aircraft. Spokesman Nasir Jamal said the airline would continue to operate its seven Boeing 777s on routes to Britain and Germany.

“This vindicates PIA’s flight standards and allied processes, which facilitate the continued operations of all of its state-of-the-art Boeing 777 aircraft,” the airline claimed. “PIA had a better safety record than even certain major European airlines and considered this action of EU discriminatory against PIA,” said a statement quoting PIA CEO Tariq Kirmani.

The airline said that at an emergency meeting convened at PIA’s request at the EU Air Transport Headquarters in Brussels on March 22, PIA’s team, led by the CEO, held extensive discussions. The PIA chief in his presentation explained various additional measures that PIA had taken to make the airline more focused on safety, customer needs, reliability and its vision for the future.

Meanwhile, Britain put restrictions on PIA operations to destinations in the UK. UK authorities had reportedly told PIA that it could now fly only Boeing 777s to UK destinations.
