European lawmakers arrive in Taiwan to show support

A group of European parliamentarians arrived in Taiwan on Thursday to show support and strengthen the relations between Taiwan and European countries.

A group of European parliamentarians arrived in Taiwan on Thursday to show support and strengthen the relations between Taiwan and European countries.

The lawmakers from Ukraine, Germany, UK, Kosovo, the Czech Republic, Belgium, and the Netherlands are in Taiwan to promote greater parliamentary exchange and increase cooperation in trade, investment, and technology.

They are the first formal Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) delegation to visit Taiwan since the alliance was founded in June 2020.


The IPAC co-chair Reinhard Butikofer was awarded the Grand Medal of Diplomacy in recognition for his contribution on enhancing relations between Taiwan and EU.

Butikofer spoke through a video call from his hotel room due to testing positive for COVID-19 when he arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday.

Speaking to journalists at the news conference in Taipei, Belgian parliamentarian Els Van Hoof said rule of laws and human rights are under pressure from the People's Republic of China, and EU countries need to cooperate.

Dutch parliamentarian Sjoerd Sjoerdsma said their trip to Taiwan sends a message to China that Taiwan should not be isolated.

Ever wonder why China didn't ask US or EU to stop supporting Taiwan if they want to do business with China? That's because the Chinese leadership know which way the US and EU is going to go if they ask US and EU to choose and they know they will simply take their money and business elsewhere. I don't know if you are that naive or you are really blinded by patriotic nationalism.

First of all, Europe depends on US to secure their trade route, which is the reason why there are NATO and they don't pay premium on Defence Budget, because the US is going to do it for them. Sure, Russia had rattle them a bit and they are putting more money into defence and less rely on the US, which they should be, but then even a fool can see this is not going to be a long run.

Second, there are market before China you know. You can only earn money as long as it is convenient for you to earn, you never sacrifice security concern for a few quick bucks, they still invest in China because China is not asking them to choose and asking them to abandon their old world order. That's what work for them, if China started to get too close to the core Western Value, you have to be a blinded fool to think Europe will drop it in favor of earning a few bucks. Again, look at EU now with the oil and gas problem, Putin make a serious miscalculation to think EU will stay out of it and US is too far to help and by the time US help arrive they would have conquered Ukraine. This is a serious misstep for him. Because EU would much rather endure a self-inflicted energy crisis then kowtow to Russia, and bear in mind, you need oil and gas to live, you don't need cheap electronic to live.

As for where will they replace China? Dude, China did not born with this market and advantage, it takes money and time to develop China into the current state, and you really think EU and US cannot do it to some other place if push comes to shove? What China have geographically, and material wise the world did not?? You have to be stupid to think nobody can replace China.
