Western Europe is at "significant risk" of falling behind China and the US in technology innovation because of a lack of investment, an analyst has warned.

IDC claims that the US is set to spend 1.75 times more on IT innovation than western Europe is between 2018 and 2022, with China also investing a greater amount.

Mark Yates, research manager at IDC, said: "That Europe trails the US in its use of digital technology is often accepted as a given. What's worrisome is the size and potential widening of the gap between the two.

"There are companies out there that are able to do more with less or that have not yet pushed their IT systems to their full potential and there is a great deal that can be done by restructuring the organisation and resetting business goals.

"So much innovation today depends on the use of cutting-edge technologies, that new spending will almost always be needed to remain competitive."

IDC said that artificial intelligence is one such example, with US businesses expected to spend nearly five times more on the tech than western Europe-based firms are by 2022.

The lack of innovation from western Europe comes despite the region having a larger IT spend than China, with China set to spend 47 per cent more on innovation.

Marc Dowd, principle client adviser at IDC, said that European businesses need to think more creatively to maintain demand for their services.

"It's important to recognise that European goods and services are still in high demand," he explained.

"Many European enterprises, especially in central and northern Europe, have done an exceptional job of streamlining operations, innovating new business, and maintaining high standards without a lot of cutting-edge technology. But that won't last.

"Whether deployed via the cloud or client-based systems, ERP and CRM solutions are essentially commodities.

"So too are a lot of tools used to ensure quality. European firms will need to up their technology game considerably over the next few years if they wish to stay competitive both globally and on the continent."

the website is for technology resellers. of course they will be biased

China seriously should worry about it. If they stop innovating, there will be nothing left to copy by China.

.
. .
They can switch back to what happened during the most part of the human history, copying from us.

Or maybe they can copy from countries like... Turkey

I see nothing wrong in copying. If China is doing it I hope Turkey does it. Rather copy and innovate rather than buying.

Dude what about hardwork to create something. As long as China respects and pay for the rights they can do whatever they want. But they are soooo recklessly copying everything they see. Damn it's more like stealing as a whole than copying. This method has huge advantages to get easy cake but I am speaking as for the ethical side of this which China doesn't even care about.

Turkey can't copy things as he wants that easy since we are respectful/signatory to related international agreements about copy rights.

Hardworking? That's what the Chinese people are famous for, but not Turkish, the western countries have restriction on exporting high tech products to China for decades, but China now is the world number one high tech products exporting nation in the world.

China now is one of the most innovative countries but Turkey is not, we also made a lot of world's first in many research fields, quantum communication, hyper speed gliders and development of clean energy for the future of mankind, by the way we just landed a moon rover on the far side of the moon the first time in the human history, we are now also leading the research in 5G, AI technology.

Why you can't make anything, blame your incompetency and laziness, not those who made them. By the way, you should remember some common sense, every new invention is more or less based on previous inventions, if that's called stealing, the human race will stop developing. US inventions are also based on European inventions accumulated for hundreds of years.

In stead of smearing others, Turkish should think about how come they are so backward in science and technology development.

Trust me if Turkey was a technological powerhouse your rivals will either steal your stuff or your scientists or your engineers.

Dont put too much faith in so called international agreements which nobody follows and the USA itself breaks a lot of those laws.

Turkey should stop playing by the rules. Those rules are nothing more placed by rich countries against poor countries or countries who barely have any influence on the global stage while rich countries can steal, copy despite international agreements.

By the way in history everybody copied each other when it came to weapon technology. Everybody wanted to get ahead of their rivals by taking their tech and innovating it or inventing something new.

Turkey should stop playing by the rules. Turkey is a regional power who can expand its influence into the Balkans, Middle East, Caucasus, North Africa, Horn of Africa and Central Asia. Turkey should do better.

You might hate Turks but you gotta be fair.

Good to see China continuing to improve itself and now leading when it comes to innovation. Meanwhile white loving turks continue to get butthurt for their european overlords.

Turkish talk about innovation? lol, my city Hangzhou recives more certificate from European IP houses than your whole clueless country can get in a year````I dont really know where do they get this confidence to laugh at others``

kid, it takes a wit, not a gut, to learn from others```the fact is your country doest have the wit to do high tech stuff, but have the most gut to do stupid things like nagging U.S, Russia, China and to support terrorists, that is fact

*to steal from others :D

More will come?Looks like Turkey is not coming this time.:pop:

Turkcell is private company just like 5-6 GSM operators in Turkey. As long as not at state-level, it's irrevelant whom they cooperate with. As for state level, Aselsan at the moment provide 4.5G service with ULAK series base stations and ULAK-5G is on the way. We don't really need Huawei or something else.

I school you more;

ASELSAN conducts studies to form a technical basis related to the following subjects that are at the forefront of 5G technology:

  • Cognitive Radio & Networks
  • Ad-Hoc Networks
  • Multi Carrier Transmission Techniques
  • Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Schemes
  • Massive MIMO
  • Internet of Things - IoT
  • Internet of Vehicles - IoV
  • Polar Codes
  • Full Duplex Access
  • Smallcell Base Station
For this purpose; ASELSAN carries out R&D activities listed below:

  • "Multi Carrier Physical Level Solutions for New Generation Tactical Communication Systems Project" with Medipol University. This study will be one of the potential technologies for Internet of Things in 5G.
  • "Distributed Pareto Optimization Based Frequency Planning in Cognitive Radio Networks Project" with Ankara University. This study will be able to find an area of use for Cognitive Radio&Networks in 5G Technology.
  • "Mobility Modelling Simulator in Cognitive Radio Networks and Development of Distributed Location Determination Algorithms Project" with Ankara Universtiy. This study will be used for situational awareness, location determination and localization in rural side in which 5G base station can not be installed.
  • "Development of Integrated 94 GHz Receiver-Transmitter Circuits Project" with IBM. Outputs of this project and the technology will play important role in communication of vehicles to each other (V2V) and to other structures (Internet of vehicles-IOV).
  • "Development of 4 Channel 28 GHz Integrated Antenna and Receiver Front End Project". The output of this project will be a technology that will be a basis for "mm-massive MIMO" in 5G.
  • A research department which works on "Data Analytics and Big Data" areas is found in ASELSAN. This department focuses its studies on "Context Aware Networking in 5G".
  • Apart from these projects, negotiations are underway to launch possible projects with Frounhofer Institute (Germany), Bristol University (United Kingdom), Keysight Company and ETRI Institute (Taiwan).

This report is saying that Europe is falling behind China, not Turkey.
