Europe-Based Firm Signs MoU To Start Tram Service In Lahore

A Europe-based firm has decided to initiate a tram service in the stretch of Canal Road (from Thokar to Jallo) in its first phase, the stretch of Canal Road from 25km to 30km.

The project will be published under PPP (public-private partnership) in the joint venture (JV) of two companies and the Punjab transport department. One of these will be European and other Chinese.

LTC or Lahore Transport Company will have the authority on behalf of the transport department, as per the words of a senior official.

“After studying various routes of buses being operated under the LTC regulations in the city, the JV declared the Canal Road fit for launching the tram service in the first phase. However, it may also launch the service on other routes as well, including Jail Road, Mall Road and other major arteries of the city. The project will be launched under PPP mode and the tram service will run on a dedicated track to be laid along Canal Road. And it will run easily in the traffic,” – said Asad Gilani, Punjab transport secretary, while talking to Dawn News on Thursday.

The tram service has been in functionality since the 1960s in Karachi, it is safe to transport to all metropolitan cities. This service is running successfully in many countries in Europe and those on other continents. However, the idea of bringing this luxury to Pakistan’s city Lahore was of Jahanzeb Khan Khichi, Punjab transport minister.

The thought occurred to him during his visit to the Czech Republic a few months back, where he held meetings with transport firms, which specialized in the launch and manufacture of trams in numerous countries through a joint-scheme with other firms.

After numerous discussions, a JV containing Inekon Group from the Czech Republic and China’s CRSC visited Lahore and examined numerous routes around a month ago.

“During their visit, we briefed them [JV representatives] about the green line (metro bus service), orange line and the planned purple and blue lines. However, after surveying routes of the metro bus and orange line, the JV’s officials were of the view that the tram service can’t be launched on these routes since it doesn’t have adequate capacity to transport such a large number of passengers. Later, the officials visited the LTC-operated buses’ routes and finally approved Canal Road for the service’s first phase,” – said Mr. Gilani.

Further on, he said that this new facility will have 30 tram sets, each with two coaches. This service will have many stops, according to the passenger’s requirements.

“Before launching the service, the JV will conduct a feasibility survey of the project. And after completion of the feasibility, the service would be launched,”

In the meantime, the transport department and JV signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) on tram service.

“This avant-garde project will be jointly implemented by a consortium of Czech and Chinese firms in collaboration with the LTC and transport department,” – Jahanzeb Khan Khichi, transport minister, said t the MoU signing ceremony.

As per the MoU, JV will work in collaboration with LTC to improve the public transport sector in Lahore.

“With the introduction of the tram service in Lahore, the traffic burden on the Canal Road will also reduce,” – the minister said.

Excellent during the hey days of the Eastern Block Czechoslovakia was a pioneer in building up Tram systems all from Prague to Vladvistosok heck also far out in Pyongyang as well we could use expertise from there as well

Again as usual in Pakistan it's a bloody MOU and issue with domestic and economic problems will hamper and scuttle the potential transit project at least finish up the Orange train first please

My personal experience from Toronto is that trams add to the congestion of already congested main throughfares. However, the report mentions that it'll have a dedicated track which will indeed be a good step and will ease traffic congestion on Canal Road.

An excellent initiative for those who cant afford cars/bikes and reply upon public transportation.

That said, waiting for devils advocate to show up with their criticism (i.e. it will ruin roads of Lahore/Paris ).

i think more focus should be on clean drinking water,technical training and education as well as health facilities,after seeing the result of brt in Peshawar govt should avoid such projects when already loans are high

Someone start these projects in Karachi too.
Roads r too much over crowded ...specially after 5pm.very hard to travel.
