Ending Turkey's EU bid would be a "fatal strategic mistake," the secretary-general of the European Parliament's Turkey Forum has told Anadolu Agency.

"Turkey's accession process should not be suspended nor ended. This would be a fatal strategic mistake of the EU side," Laura Batalla said in Brussels earlier this week.

Ending talks would be a "lose-lose situation" because Turkey and the EU are "extremely interlinked," not only economically but also politically, she added.

After tension arose between Turkey and some EU states following last year's defeated coup attempt, some German politicians publicly proposed halting accession talks amid a non-binding vote by the European Parliament on shelving discussions.

The European Council will discuss Turkey's negotiations next month, although some member states like Hungary, Finland, Lithuania and Ireland have openly opposed German proposals to suspend talks.

Batalla said ending the negotiations officially is "not likely" as unanimity is needed to ax the talks.

In response to Turkey's insistence on opening new talks chapters -- especially Chapter 23 on the judiciary and fundamental rights and Chapter 24 on justice, freedom and security -- Batalla said the EU should make progress on accession negotiations.

Turkey should be supported in terms of human rights and the rule of law, something which the European Parliament has said it is concerned about.

The best way to overcome these issues is by opening new chapters, Batalla said, describing them as the "best tool" the EU has to create "a transformative impact on a democratization process of Turkey".

Batalla also said the technical process of joining the EU had become "politicized".

God damn it! For a second there I was thinking (hoping) they'd actually be honest this time around and just say what's really in their heart. But no. Of course it's naive to think that the EU would be straightforward with Turkey. Looks like they're going to opt for making Turkey wait at the door for another 50 years.

.
Turkey is never going into EU and that's a fact, it doesn't have to do with democracy, human right etc etc...

lt's like asking China to join the EU completely opposite things.

.
Turkey should hold a general referendum regarding EU membership like we did with the presidential system. Simple majority wins. If 50%+1 person wants to continue the endless road of EU accession talks, we stay and the current status quo remains. If 50%+1 person say we should leave, we cut our losses and determine another path for our nation with the many alternatives out there.

What dont you get?
If we stop EU negotiations, everything will stop, costums Union and all the other benefits, like trade agreements bound to EU negotiations, all the help we get for infrastructure, culture, education etc.
Do we want to pay export taxes to the EU,our biggest trade partner, what will happen to our already fragile economy?
Take a look at the UK,its trying to make some deals for its exit, good trade deals, costums deals which will take at least 3/4 years.
Its not black and white,we cant just quit the EU negotiations, there is no alternative to the Turkiye EU trade.
So before making any suggestion on what to do,think of the consquences first.

Last time I checked Turkey wasn't already a member of the EU, so we're not leaving anything we're a member of. We're not losing anything we already have. Customs union is an intergovernmental agreement and is not conditional upon Turkey continuing to try and become a full member of the EU. The UK is trying to negotiate terms because, unlike Turkey, they've been a member for decades and their institutions are highly intertwined with those of the EU. From trade to justice to security, the UK has been and still is highly dependent on the EU. Thus, they have to negotiate an orderly exit strategy. This doesn't apply to Turkey. As for the customs union, it benefits the EU as much as it benefits Turkey, if not more. They're not going to want to lose a market of 80 million. Remember, we import waaaay more from the EU than we export to it.

The only disadvantage of quitting our EU membership talks I can concede has to do with Turkey's PR in the world stage. We'll be accused of becoming anti-West. But that's just something we have to answer properly and deal with.
As for Turkey getting "help" from the EU, that's a load of nonsense. Whatever little money we get is symbolic and is offset by EU's help and support for the PKK, DHKP-C, FETO, etc. Turkey can and will manage just fine without the EU because we already are doing just that! Do you really want Brussels to dictate us what laws to pass? Who to arrest? How to manage our economy? If the EU was any good Greece wouldn't be the shithole that it is today.

Turkey has always been an imperial, independent power and needs to find an identity on par with its historic roots. Our economy is growing much faster than the EU average. We should sign free-trade and visa-free-travel deals with more countries around the world.

Buddy, please don't be so pessimistic. You drew a dark and chaotic result which is not realistic.

Customs Union is independent from EU-negotiations ( Norway has a similar status - except Visa restrictions-), UK will get it for sure. Maybe they could block our extensions of Customs Union Agreement. ( restriction to do trade with third party nations without EU permission).
Morocco has almost same rigths as Turkey has with Trade Union.
Infrastructure, cultural and educational funds are realy "Peanuts" a small symbolic -blood plaster-,
compared to the sum we spend for the refugees and since 1984 for PKK - anti terror warfare-. Regards my friend

@T-123456 After elections in Germany probably BND President will be impeached. Remember me ;)

Immediately suspend the migrant deal. Had our then retarded **** for a prime minister not gotten us such a shitty deal we would have had a much stringer negotiating hand against those dirty two faced hypocrites across the Agean. Immediately task a group of economists (neutral+experienced) to study what pros/cons the current Customs Deal has, why pros/cons expanding the deal would have and finally what pros/cons leaving the customs union would be. Draw up an economic plan to deal with possibly of exiting the current customs union, start implementing as options become viable. Immediately place a choke hold measures on all NGOs and other semi-official European organizations, terminate licenses for all who refuse to comply. Unilaterally suspend the pathetic negotiation talks for Cyprus, use a stick or a carrot to either unite the TRNC with Turkey or make a semi official enclave of the Turkish Republic and immediately start building up military infrastructure starting with new minefields against the southern parasites along with a Syria-style border wall.... these will get us on the right path for a start
