European Union foreign ministers are expected to announce a ban on the purchase of oil from Iran at a meeting in Brussels.

It would be the latest EU measure to be introduced to punish Iran over its nuclear programme.

The EU currently buys around 20% of Iran's oil exports.

Tehran denies that it is trying to develop nuclear weapons and says talks and not sanctions are the only way to resolve the dispute.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon said the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, as well as a British Royal Navy frigate and a French warship, have passed through the Straits of Hormuz at the entrance to the Gulf without incident in the wake of Iranian threats to block the trade route.

'Substantial impact'
EU ambassadors were reported to have reached agreement on the details of the sanctions early on Monday - namely that the signing of any new oil contracts with Iran will end the moment the ban comes into effect - with existing contracts being honoured until 1 July.

The agreement is expected to be given formal approval by the foreign ministers.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton repeated again on Monday her previous assertion that the sanctions were a way of persuading Iran to take part in talks.

"The pressure of sanctions is designed to try and make sure that Iran takes seriously our request to come to the table and meet," she said as she arrived at the meeting in Brussels.

She said world powers had yet to receive a reply to an offer made to Iran in October to hold new talks.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said, as he arrived for the meeting, that the measures were an important way of increasing "the peaceful legitimate pressure on the Iranian government to enter into meaningful negotiations with the international community".

EU ministers are also expected to agree added restrictive measures on Iran's central bank, although there are no further details on that.

The BBC's Iran correspondent, James Reynolds, says oil is the country's most valuable asset and sales help to keep the Iranian government in money and power.

A decision by the EU to stop buying from Iran may damage the Iranian economy - but in itself it won't destroy it, our correspondent says.

Rising tensions
Iran sells most of its oil to countries in Asia. The EU and the United States are now working to persuade Asian countries to reduce their purchases from Iran as well.

Iran has already threatened to retaliate over the sanctions by blocking the Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Gulf, through which 20% of the world's oil exports pass.

The US has said it would keep the trade route open, raising the possibility of a confrontation.

Late last year Iran conducted 10 days of military exercises near the Strait of Hormuz, test-firing several missiles.

Oil prices have risen already because of the increasing tension and the expected impact of an EU ban on oil supplies to Europe.

Are you in Iran? What is your reaction to the expected EU sanctions? What do you think of Iran's nuclear programme? You can send us your views using the form below.

Finally, the Europeans doing the right thing. Let us hope Iran will start to think twice if its nuclear ambitions really worth it.

You really have no ability to think do you?
You do know this will harm the normal people not the regime...

Unfortunately there is no way to separate completely between the regime and the people, although the West should do what it can to minimise the damage to the citizens. Only cripple sanctions might persuade the notorious Iranian regime to change course on the nuclear issue.

good, That's what we've been waiting for. Let's speed up enrichment then. We got some thousands of unused centrifuges that I think we should start installing them after they ban our oil. It is their last option (the military option is the next one if this last option fails but that's highly unlikely to happen), but we still have many options open. like we can install thousands of new centrifuges, or we can enrich our uranium to higher levels, or we can test a nuclear explosion underground and many other things. So let them use their last card in their policy of 'the stick or the carrot' and then they'll run out of options and have to sit on their ***** and watch us doing what we want like polite kids.

LOL. a zionist talking about barbarism

But of course, when I see a terror regime which butcher its own people, murder innocent people in the region, support terror organisations, and committed to the destruction of a sovereign country then I have no problem to call it exactly what it is.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Iran will not have nuclear weapons. You can put whatever show you like, the result will be the same.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Iran is already in possession of nuclear weapons and even if it is not, it has already enough enriched uranium to build one within a month or so. With tens of underground nuclear facilities and with the ability to reprocess plutonium, Iran isn't far from the bomb at all.
Even if Iran never gets an A-bomb as you claim, still Iran, even right now, has the ability to produce tens of depleted uranium bombs or to produce dirty bombs.

You clear do not have even a basic understanding about nuclear development and the nuclear fuel cycle. I can assure you that Iran can still be stopped and has still a long road before producing its first nuclear bomb.

Such amount of crap in one post is even unusual for PDF. You obviously do not know the basic history of the 20th century, but that not stopping you from lecturing about events like WWII that you have no clue about them.

Write whatever nonsense you like, but Israel never sprayed with bullets its own people like your regime butchered the hundred of thousands of demonstrators who had the courage to protest in 2009 against the election rigging. Israel never denied Iran's right to exist like your leaders constantly call for the elimination of Israel.

Actually that's what I should say about you. I have read all the IAEA agency reports from 2003 to the latest one and I've also read also UNSC resolutions against Iran. the IAEA report on 2003 condemns Iran for conducting research on 'plutonium reprocessing' in laboratory scales. If you don't know what plutonium reprocessing means, go read about it. the latest IAEA report acknowledges that Iran is now a nuclear state and you can see that even people on the forum congratulated Iran for that.
Iran is already a nuclear state (whether you like it or not) and you can do nothing about it. Sad, but true.
To find the IAEA board of governors latest report go to this address:

To read the IAEA reports on Iran's nuclear activities in 2003 go to these files:

(Read section C)

US made the bomb with much lesser than what we now.the thing is we dont want the nuke ,yet! but we have enough facilities to build 3 bomb .
AND
the question is who dares to stop us? you?
for the ones that own your government ,Israel is just a practice target for iran they sent you there to butchered .

You perhaps read the reports but you did not understand them.

There is a different between having a nuclear programme and being a nuclear weapons state. Almost every country in the world has some kind of nuclear programme for all kind of civilian purposes (science, medicine, commercial ventures, energy), but very few can develop nucelar weapons.

And no, Iran is not part of that group.
