A barrage of 20 rockets was fired Wednesday night from Syria towards Israeli military outposts in the Golan Heights. No injuries were reported. Several rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

The Israeli army is attributing the attack to members of the Quds force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

The rocket fire struck near the border with Syria.

The military said intelligence assessments earlier in the week anticipated that after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he was withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear accord, Israel was likely to be targeted by rocket fire and Iran would try to retaliate.

Syria Blames Israel for Damascus Strike; Target Was Iranian Missiles
Nonetheless, the army has predicted that such an attack would not lead to a full-fledged war. Tehran has issued several threats over the past month, saying that it would hurt Israel in response to a slew of attacks that were ascribed to the Israeli air force. The latest attack, carried out on May 9, claimed the lives of seven Iranians in the Syrian air force base T4.

Over the past month tensions have been high along the Israeli border with Syria and the army has increased security measures in the area, deploying more Iron Dome batteries across the northern region.

Iranian forces stationed in Syria fired about 20 rockets or projectiles at Israeli military positions in the Golan Heights just after midnight on Thursday, Israel’s defence forces (IDF) said.

Iran deal: how Trump's actions could flare violence in Middle East

Several but not all rockets were intercepted by Israeli defences, an IDF spokesman, Lt Col Jonathan Conricus, told reporters, saying a preliminary assessment found there was minimal damage.

“At approximately 12.10, 10 minutes past midnight, forces belonging to the Iranian Quds force fired approximately 20 projectiles, most of them are probably rockets but that is yet to be determined, towards the forward line of IDF positions in the Golan Heights,” he said.

“So far we are not aware of any casualties, any IDF casualties,” he said, adding that Israeli forces had “responded”.

The attack, if confirmed, would mark the first time Iranian forces had fired rockets in a direct strike on Israeli forces in the occupied Golan Heights. The area has been on high alert since the US president, Donald Trump, announced he planned to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal.

“The IDF views this Iranian attack very severely,” Conricus said. “This event is not over.”

Now thay say Its 40 rockets .
