I think Turkish Intelligence concluded that Assad would fall and as a result, Turkey would face no resistance from Syrian forces when they first invaded Syria.

The big question is, why did Turkey even intervene in Syria? Even if Assad would fall and they would successfully control and annex whole of Syria, apart from showing military might, they have nothing to gain from it. If they did it to destroy PKK, they are only making PKK stronger by attacking Syrian forces.

As a result of Turkish meddling in Syria. Turkey have distanced itself from US, Russia, future Syrian government, Iran, EU, Saudi and UAE. Erdogan has lost his popularity in Turkey. PKK is stronger.

What is it to gain from intervening in Syria? Is Erdogan really this dumb? Is someone playing him?

looks like Turkey gonna take its time building up and mobilising forces in idlib till end of Feb...lets see what the russians come up with. what if the russian establish the "observation points" on SAA side in the same way turks did on the rebel side...will Turkey risk hitting those points in its operation against SAA. There are 3 major Kurdish enclaves in Syria.

They are shown in yellow on this map from left to right: 1) Afrin 2) Kobani 3) Hasaka

Afrin Kurds were cooperating with Russia and Assad, Kobani and Hasaka Kurds cooperated with US.

Erdogan made a deal with Putin: Erdogan sells Ghouta, Hama and South Idlib, and in return Putin allows Erdogan to cleanse Afrin.

After that Erdogan wanted to cleanse Kobani and Hasaka in same manner, in return for selling Idlib. Then Erogan planned to settled 2 million Arabs displaced from Idlib in Kobani and Hasaka.

However Trump told Erdogan: dont touch my Kurds or I will destroy your economy. As result Erdogan took only piece of desert between Kobani and Hasaka.

Iran is in Syria to support Assad and Hezbollah and destroy ISIS. Iran has been very open about it from day 1

Turkey was supporting the self proclaimed Caliphate, Rebels, Turkmen militias, and all the other terrorist groups and terror branches of ISIS and Al Qaida before they became enemies with Turkey. Turkey has been militarily involved in Syria since 2011 kid. Not since 2 days ago.

Last I checked, Assad was still in power, ISIS still destroyed, and Hezbollah still safe. Sanctioned Iran achieved all its objectives from 2000km away. After 9 years you have absolutely squat to show for it, even though you share a border with Syria.
