Erdoğan says Sudan agreed to give island to Turkey for rebuilding to boost umrah tourism upon his request

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Dec. 25 that his Sudanese counterpart agreed to temporarily hand over Suakin Island to Turkey for reconstruction purposes in a bid to improve umrah tourism from the country to Saudi Arabia.

Suakin, one of the oldest seaports in Africa, was used by African Muslims who set out for pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Ottomans used the port city to secure Hejaz province - present-day western Saudi Arabia - from attackers using the Red Sea front.

“I said ‘Right now, Hanafi and Shafii mosques are built here and the customs departments were also built. However, you should give the island to us for a while and we will rebuild and revive this island in accordance with its original form. My brother Omar al-Bashir [Sudanese President] said ‘O.K.,’” Erdoğan said, speaking at the Turkey-Sudan Forum organized by the Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEİK).

The president said his proposal came during a visit to the island with al-Bashir.

“Do you know what rebuilding and reviving [the island] means? We will give those who destroyed here this answer: You came here and destroyed it. The fact that you destroyed this place is like you shaved off our beards. But do not forget that we will rebuild and revive this place in such a way that the shaved beard will grow stronger and you will see it,” Erdoğan said, quoting Sokullu Mehmet Pasha who uttered those words over an Ottoman defeat in the Mediterranean Sea.

Erdoğan also stated that such a reconstruction of the island would contribute to its historic heritage, adding that those who want to go to Mecca for umrah from Turkey would first visit the island before crossing to Jeddah by ship, in what he called “package tourism.”

“This will also bring about the socializing of our people, and history will be resurrected again,” he said.

"Sawakin (Arabic: سواكن‎ Sawákin) is a port city in north-eastern Sudan, on the west coast of the Red Sea. It was formerly the region's chief port, but is now secondary to Port Sudan, about 50 kilometres (30 mi) north. Sawakin used to be considered the height of medieval luxury on the Red Sea, but the old city built of coral is now in ruins. In 1983 it had a population of 18,030 and the 2009 estimate is 43,337. Ferries run daily from Sawakin to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia."

Turkey to restore Sudanese Red Sea port and build naval dock
Ali Kucukgocmen, Khalid Abdelaziz
ISTANBUL/KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Turkey will rebuild a ruined Ottoman port city on Sudan’s Red Sea coast and construct a naval dock to maintain civilian and military vessels, Sudan’s foreign minister said on Tuesday, as Ankara expands military and economic ties in Africa.

The restoration at Suakin was agreed during a visit to the ancient port by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour said.

Making the first trip by a Turkish president to Sudan, Erdogan said Turkey had been temporarily granted part of Suakin so it could rebuild the area as a tourist site and a transit point for pilgrims crossing the Red Sea to Mecca.

He said the Suakin deal was one of several, worth $650 million in total, agreed with Sudan, which emerged from two decades of U.S. sanctions in October and is seeking to attract international investment.

The countries also agreed “to build a dock to maintain civilian and military vessels,” Ghandour told reporters, adding that they had signed an agreement “that could result in any kind of military cooperation”.

The agreements come three months after Turkey formally opened a $50 million military training base in Somalia as it exerts increasing influence in the region.

Suakin was Sudan’s major port when it was ruled by the Ottoman Empire, but fell into disuse over the last century after the construction of Port Sudan, 35 miles (60 km) to the north.

Speaking on Monday in Khartoum, Erdogan said the refurbished port city would attract Mecca-bound pilgrims who would want to see the island’s history, helping Sudan’s tourism sector.

“Imagine, people from Turkey wishing to go on pilgrimage will come and visit the historical areas on Suakin Island,” Erdogan said. “From there ... they will cross to Jeddah by boat.”

The other agreements signed during Erdogan’s visit include Turkish investment to build Khartoum’s planned new airport and private sector investments in cotton production, electricity generation and building grain silos and meat slaughterhouses.

Erdogan and Bashir said they aimed for trade between the two countries to reach $10 billion, Turkey’s Foreign Economic Relations Board said.

In October, the United States lifted a trade embargo and other penalties that had cut Sudan off from much of the global financial system.

Sudan’s state minister for investment has said he aims to attract investment of $10 billion a year, compared to $1 billion estimated by the United Nations for 2016.

".construct a naval dock to maintain civilian and military vessels."

Now all makes sense . One stone at the other. On the other side ÇAD is the heart of Africa and in the center of EU and USA interest war zone. Tomorrow Tunisia.

Turkey's leader denies plans for naval base in Sudan

Published: December 28, 2017

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has denied that his country is constructing a naval base on Sudan's Red Sea coast, saying Turkey plans to restore Ottoman-era ruins in the area.

In comments published in Hurriyet newspaper on Thursday, Erdogan also says his government "laughed" off a request for Turkey to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir during an Islamic summit in Istanbul this month. Al-Bashir is on the International Criminal Court's wanted list for war crimes in Darfur.

Erdogan says Turkey is not a party to the ICC's founding treaty.

Asked about reports that Turkey would build a naval base at Sudan's port of Suakin, Erdogan told a group of journalists on his return from an Africa visit that included Sudan: "There is no such thing as a military port."

.
I said elsewhere in the past that Turkey should have a military presence in Sudan and Tunisia. Strategically it makes sense.
The Red Sea carries a lot of trade from Asia into the Med. Turkey is making a lot of investments and Turkish economic growth relies on building economic ties beyond the traditional European markets. To do that countries like Sudan and Somalia need security to grow their own economies which in turn will benefit Turkey because of these ties and investments.
MbS is likely to be the future leader of Saudi Arabia and so far he has shown himself to be immature and reckless. As soon as he got a tad of power he began to flex his muscles by bullying Qatar. It didn't work with Turkey and immediately SA and their bots and trolls started a pro PKK campaign that some still carry on now. A Turkish military presence to its east and west will have to be considered into their calculations now before they make underhanded threats of arming the PKK. Between bungling Qatar and the mess they're involved in Yemen, I'm quite concerned about the future of the region so long as he's in government.
As for Egypt, remember Medusa 5? The joint Greek-Egyptian exercises right up on our coast. Turkey was limited in it's response because there wasn't really much we could do about it, but in the future the Egyptians won't get as cocky.
Although the Egyptians and Saudis do come across as really pathetic, I don't think it should be considered a reflection of the people in those countries. The voices you hear come from the state apparatuses of those countries, which are very authoritarian and corrupt which leads to a lot of "a** licking" from tools trying to get some brownie points from the powers that be. It's always ministers or civil servants and the usual sycophants. Ordinary people in those countries don't want anything to do with it.
