Erdogan says Greek islands ‘used to be ours’

In what was widely seen as a fresh dig at Greece, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday reiterated that several Greek islands in the eastern Aegean “used to be ours.”

The Turkish leader made waves recently in Greece when he said that the Treaty of Lausanne, which set the borders between Greece and Turkey in 1923, was unfair on his country.

He returned to the subject on Saturday, saying he didn’t understand why his remarks had raised so many objections.

“I said Lausanne and they got annoyed. Why are you annoyed?” he said, adding that “these islands were ours.”

“We have our monuments and our mosques there [on the islands],” he said.

“Whoever signed [for their passing to Greece] bears the responsibility.”

Cyprus is an independend nation. The islands are inhabitated by greeks.

If Erdogan is sad that some turkish monuments stand on those islands it would be logical to ease his pain and destroy them.

The moment Turkey leaves Nato, these islands will be under Turkish rule again. That's why they'll never let us go, even if the majority in Turkey would want to exit NATO. However, this conflict is very important for us. It is one of our tools to influence Europe thanks to the fact that the Euro Zone would collapse terribly if Turkey attacks Greece. First of all,legally,there's no dispute over those islands,only over maritime borders,they're Greek by international standards.

Second,where did the Turkish military become so "battle hardened"?

Third,the Greek military has 200 4th generation fighter jets ,PAC 3's,S 300's,Spada 2000's,Buk AA systems,Leopard 2A4,A6's tanks,Apaches, frigates,submarines...they're no pushover.

Forth,they have allies who wouldn't stand by in case of an invasion.

Anyway,these are just games of Erdogan to attack Ataturk and his legacy,Turkey would never invade.

Oh boy, there is already a customs union between Turkey and EU. We are your 5th biggest trading partner in this world. Wake up! Next year they will renegotiate parts of this deal. This is far more important for Turkey than any free visa talk.
