Prominent US scholar Noam Chomsky has accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of having double standards on terrorism after Erdoğan accused him of ignorance and sympathizing with terrorists.

Hours after a bombing attack in Turkey’s largest city of Istanbul that killed 11 people on Tuesday, Erdogan directed a series of fierce criticisms at Chomsky and the “so-called intellectuals” who had signed a letter the month before, urging Ankara to end its siege of Kurdish towns and cities in the southeastern parts of the country.

Erdogan, who was delivering a televised speech to a conference of Turkish ambassadors in Ankara, invited Chomsky to visit the site of the attack.

In an email to the Guardian, Chomsky rejected the invitation. “If I decide to go to Turkey, it will not be on his invitation, but as frequently before at the invitation of the many courageous dissidents, including Kurds who have been under severe attack for many years.”

Chomsky, who is a renowned linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, and political activist, accused the Turkish president of hypocrisy and supporting extremism.

“Turkey blamed ISIL [for the attack on Istanbul], which Erdogan has been aiding in many ways, while also supporting the al-Nusra Front, which is hardly different. He then launched a tirade against those who condemn his crimes against Kurds – who happen to be the main ground force opposing ISIL in both Syria and Iraq. Is there any need for further comment,” the scholar argued.

In an open letter last month, Chomsky and hundreds of other scholars condemned Erdogan’s clamp down on the Kurdish opposition, holding him responsible for the current “crisis” in the country.

“The responsibility for the present self-inflicted crisis in the country must lie squarely with Erdogan,” the letter read.

“With the sieges imposed on their communities in the southeast, Turkey has effectively declared war on its own people. This current crisis is manufactured and totally unnecessary. It demonstrates once again that Erdogan is a deeply divisive force,” it added.

Since late July 2015, Turkey’s southeastern regions have witnessed a spike in violence amid heavy confrontations between army forces and the PKK, an outlawed group that have been fighting for an autonomous Kurdish region inside Turkey since the 1980s.

Ankara’s military has also been involved in an offensive against the Kurdish group in neighboring Iraq.

Chomsky hits back at Erdoğan, accusing him of double standards on terrorism

The leftwing US academic Noam Chomsky has hit back at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after the Turkish president accused him of ignorance and sympathising with terrorists.

Hours after Tuesday’s bomb attack on a tourist area of Istanbul, Erdoğan delivered a sneering criticism of Chomsky and “so-called intellectuals” who had signed a letter calling on Turkey to lift its siege against Kurdish towns and citiesin the south-east of the country.

He invited Chomsky to visit the area in a defiant televised speech to a conference of Turkish ambassadors in Ankara.

Chomsky has now rejected the invitation. In an email to the Guardian he said: “If I decide to go to Turkey, it will not be on his invitation, but as frequently before at the invitation of the many courageous dissidents, including Kurds who have been under severe attack for many years.”

Chomsky also claimed Erdoğan was operating double standards on terrorism.

In the open letter to Erdoğan released last month, Chomsky and hundreds of others accused him of waging war against his own people. It said: “The responsibility for the present self-inflicted crisis in the country must lie squarely with Erdoğan, who perceives the Kurds – whether it is the HDP [the pro-Kurdish, left-leaning party which gained 81 seats at the last election], the PYD in Syria or the PKK [the separatist Kurdish Workers’ Party] – as obstacles to his plan to establish supreme rule for the Turkish presidency.

“With the sieges imposed on their communities in the south-east, Turkey has effectively declared war on its own people. This current crisis is manufactured and totally unnecessary. It demonstrates once again that Erdoğan is a deeply divisive force.”

In his speech, Erdoğan said: “Let our ambassador from the United States invite Chomsky, who has made statements about Turkey’s operations against the terrorist organisation. Let’s host him in the region.”

Referring to operations of the Kurdish separatists in the PKK, Erdoğan added: “We are ready to tell them what is happening in the south-east. They should see with their eyes whether the problem is a violation by the state or the hijacking of our citizens’ rights and freedoms by the terrorist organisation.”

He went on to accuse Chomsky and the other signatories of displaying the “mentality of colonialism,” saying: “You so-called intellectuals are not enlightened persons, you are in the dark. You are nothing like intellectuals.”

A live translation by al-Jazeera quoted Erdoğan saying: “I have a message for those academics. Just putting your signature on a dry piece of paper means nothing. Come to Turkey.

“Chomsky can see what is taking place in Turkey with his own eyes, not through the eyes of a fifth column. Let those academics come to Turkey – I’m certain we will be able to show them the true picture.”

In his email to the Guardian, Chomsky accused Erdoğan of hypocrisy. He said: “Turkey blamed Isis [for the attack on Istanbul], which Erdoğan has been aiding in many ways, while also supporting the al-Nusra Front, which is hardly different. He then launched a tirade against those who condemn his crimes against Kurds – who happen to be the main ground force opposing Isis in both Syria and Iraq. Is there any need for further comment?”

Chomsky probably would! He's a favorite of the Russians, Hezbollah, etc. And he's done linguistic studies of the Eskimos, too!

Chomsiki lose when he rejected the invitation, what the Turkish goverment did over a decade is far enough for the Kurds. Even the Kurds in Turkey now that, only the pkk sympathiasts don't get it. Chomsky listen to pkk Kurds but not Kurds who are united with the Turkish State.

They have managed in two years to arm them self, every help of the state to use it for arming the roads with IED.

So for chomsky we say this, go suk pkk.

Russians and westerns cant understand Erdogan. He is muslim and he always try to stand on the right side.He takes position according to events. His creterias are different from Westerns.
He didnt support Assad and Sisi or others .It was more suitable for Turkey. Rational mentality cant understand this.Sometimes you can win when you are loosing.I can understand it when i see Syrian refugees living in Turkey.
Peoples who dont love Erdogan wants from him not to go against them but he cant be slience because he is afraid of ALLAH(C:C).Because of this he cant support DAESH. He hates from them.He knows how big damage Daesh gives to muslim peoples.
