Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan caused displeasure in Athens on Thursday by indicating that Ankara “gave away” Aegean islands to Greece under the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, the pact that defined the borders of modern Turkey following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

In a speech to regional officials in Ankara, Erdogan appeared to express his regret for the border decisions imposed by the pact. “Some tried to deceive us by presenting Lausanne as victory,” he said.

“In Lausanne, we gave away the islands that you could shout across to,” he said, referring to Greek islands located in the Aegean Sea close to the Turkish coastline.

Reacting to Erdogan’s comments, a Greek Foreign Ministry source remarked that “everyone should respect the Treaty of Lausanne,” noting that it is “a reality in the civilized world which no one, including Ankara, can ignore.”

The same source indicated that the Turkish leader’s comments were likely geared for domestic consumption.

While making clear his displeasure with the Treaty of Lausanne, Erdogan indicated during his speech that those who attempted a coup against Turkey in July would have imposed a far worse state of affairs.

“If this coup had succeeded, they would have given us a treaty that would have made us long for Sevres,” he said, referring to the pact that preceded the Treaty of Lausanne in 1920, abolishing the Ottoman Empire.

“We are still struggling about what the continental shelf will be, and what will be in the air and the land. The reason for this is those who sat at the table for that treaty. Those who sat there did not do [us] justice, and we are reaping those troubles right now,” he said.

Erdogan’s comments come amid reports that Ankara is pushing for the abolition of NATO patrols in the Aegean that have been contributing to curbing illegal migration.

According to sources, Ankara made an official request for the termination of the patrols earlier this month at a session of the North Atlantic Council, noting that the migrant influx has slowed considerably in recent months.

Some tried to deceive us by presenting Lausanne as victory,

He is referring to Ataturk and his compatriots....

One should ask....what did you do for the Turkey ?

- Under Erdoğan ruling, some 16 Turkish islands have been invaded by Greece ( https://defence.pk/threads/greece-occupied-16-turkish-islands.387400/ ) ;

- The Süleyman Şah tomb in Turkish land in Syria has been evacuated and left to ISIS terrorists,

- South Eastern Turkey is very similar to Afganistan or Syria due to PKK terrorists that are let do what ever they wanted, and therefore many Turkish soldiers are killed by PKK planted bombs with help of local HDP mayors who have been doing propaganda and assist the PKK terrorists due to ''Peace policy'' of Erdoğan and AKP, and still members of HDP are in Turkish parliament, and recieving money from the Turkish states;

- Feto members are supported and let to infiltrate into the state with help of Erdoğan and AKP, resulting in jailing patriot soldiers in the army with fake cases and plant Feto member into the army, who later(15 July 2016) conducted a coup with many killings of civilians ,

Add i would add.... under AKP rule Turkey became a target for ISIS terrorists.

Also, i would say "DHKP-C" terrorists resurfaced again.

. .
I should be given Athens citizenship!!

It's probably easy to yapp about something 93 years later when you were not the one doing the actual fighting.Did he ever criticisize the last sultans who were all to happy to give everything up except for a small fiefdom for them at Sevres ?

Yeah, exactly..... Sultan sold the entire country....why don't you say something about that too ?

I think, Erdogan sees himself as the best ruler of Turkey ever...however, he would be always over-shadowed by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk..... he can't digest that fact.

Compared to Sevres, Lausanne was a major victory.
Mate, he is yapping about the 12 Islands..... what Ataturk should have done ??? We didn't even have a single fleet at that time...we had absolutely no leverage.

He says "diplomacy failure"....lol, if you are such good at diplomacy, why did we became enemies with the half of ME ? Or why couldn't you get Turkey into EU ?

Now diplomacy is the biggest issue he should just shut up, Turkey has shown a worse FP in the last 10 years than ever before in its history, we might be only second to North Korea when it comes to diplomacy.

But regarding Athens, sry Turkey is not gonna accept 12 Nmi.

6 Nmi

. .
12 Nmi means war. :butcher:
Thats Greece can impose 12 Nmi means Turkey has to accept the respective treaties but Turkey didnt sign anything regarding this so the status-quo of 6 Nmi will stay, Greece cant just impose anything on its own.

Bahceli knows best: We solved all our problems so we can now concentrate on something 93 years ago?

Here's another AKP-ian(an MP if I understood well) showing his historical prowess

Yeah right,Crete was lost in 1913 after the Balkan Wars like many other islands on his map,Rhodes lost in 1912 to the Italians, nothing to do with Lausanne.

.
Many of these Islands had Turkish-majority populations before they were forced out along with Muslims in the Balkans.

.
The ordinary Turkish citizen is criticising Erdoğan's references towards the Treaty of Lausanne now but to be fair, this criticism isn't substantial. People are more annoyed about Erdoğan's timing. And they are right because at the moment we have more important issues to handle. But it's an undeniable fact that the majority in Turkey demands a renegotiation.
