An epidemic of water borne disease was broken out among the displaced people and over 100 cases of gastroenteritis and cholera were reported from the flood- hit district of Mardan in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province.

The epidemic occurred as a result of standing water in Mardan, 65 km from the province's capital Peshawar.

"So far 60 cases of gastroenteritis and 57 of cholera were confirmed from both urban and rural population of the flood-hit district," local newspaper The Nation Friday quoted Hidayat Ullah of District Headquarters Hospital as saying.

"Only a woman has been died of cholera," he said, adding on daily basis dozens of gastroenteritis patients were being reported from the flood affected areas of the district.

Through a World Health Organization (WHO) source this was also confirmed that one each emergency kit containing emergency relief medicines for 10,000 patients for the period of three months have been dispatched to Mardan.

Dozens of mobile health teams have been sent to the affected areas, which are vaccinating the people and providing the water purification tablets to kill the germs.

Hidayat said that so far 35,000 persons have been vaccinated against water borne diseases, adding that their set target is vaccination of 100,000 people in the flood affected areas.

At least 100 people died in the city of Mardan on Saturday. An estimated 150 people were on the bridge watching surging floodwaters when it crumbled. Many are still missing.

Flooding has killed at least 200 people in Pakistan since the start of the monsoon season in mid-July.

The flooding has also destroyed houses, roads, railway tracks, water supplies and sewerage pipes and left crops ruined across the country.

Pakistan's Metrological Office predicted on Friday more heavy rain in the next 10 days.
