Epic Demographic Chart Shows What's Happening To The Populations Of The US, China, And Japan

Demographics is destiny.

Countries with a young, growing workforce grow faster. Countries with an aging, shrinking workforce find growth to be much harder.

Michael McDonough, the Chief Economist at Bloomberg LP, just published this great chart, showing the demographic pyramids of Japan, China, and the US. Demographic pyramids show the relative size of each age cohort at a point in time.

So for example, you can see that in 1990, Japan had a lot of workers who were in their early 40s (prime working age) as well as a sizable contingent of teenagers. But you can see that these days, there are very few teens, and lots of folks who are older than 60, which speaks to how the country is graying. By 2050, there will be tons of 70 year olds, and almost no teenagers (relatively speaking).

In 1990, China was incredibly young, with almost nobody old, but as you can see it's rapidly aging as well, with a substantial contingent of workers in their 40s.

The best looking, really, is the US, which has a nice evenly distributed population. The shape of the pyramid isn't changing much, in part because our immigration policy keeps the population from getting too old.

The chart in the op assumes that US will remain young forever due to immigration.

I wonder if it factors the fact that skilled people will be less inclined to immigrate to US as it declines and rest of the world catches up slowly.

China will have a billion young people as the birth control restrictions are lifted. China is about to have a massive population boom over the coming 2 decades. The retirement age will also be raised when the CPC deems necessary to make sure old people continue to work instead of being a burden on the state budget. As Chinese manufacturing upgrades into more high tech, labour will become less of an issue as automation and other technology replaces human labour. It's already happening as China just became the largest robot market and this will only increase.

65 years of age is not really old in the modern day, in the 1950's 50 years of age was considered old. As humans live longer, they can contribute more to society with knowledge and consumption from working in the services sector.

Biggest problem for any country is population decline.

The population pyramid for the US looks superficially healthy. But in reality, white birth rates in the US are below replacement. The only people having babies are the less desirable browns :). Expect the USA to resemble Brazil in the not too distant future.

my, US is never so picky when talking about immigration. In the past, young, uneducated and poor white peoples from Britain (Scotland and Ireland) who flocks come to America, and then came the another undesirable white from Italy and Spain, and then came the poor and full of problems Slavic races. And then came the Christians Arabs from Syrian and Levant in mid 50's, US never mind if it's came from Africa, Mexican or another else place in this world. As long as they can bring another new human resources in the much needed place in US. It is their merit system who made US standing above all countries in this world even after so much difficulties in the past.

And one last thing, White or not, young peoples always will became nice addition into their army surely.

US is and will be the land of freedom and opportunity in the future. Immigrants can't wait for the rest of the world as you said catch up slowly.
