honest question: What is the UAE hoping to gain out of this beside some publicity?

Space programs are unbelievably expensive. states who spend the money on it usually have alterior motives behind it (missile development)

the US and USSR had the added rivalry over world dominance to go along with their space races.

what is the UAEs end game? just spend billions so people say "wow good job UAE"? im not honestly disparaging (or trying to) just trying to understand the motive since there is no obvious one....

Congratulations to the UAE, but i have to point out that there's nothing indigenous about this mission. The spacecraft/probe was developed by the USA, launched with a Japanese rocket, and the scientific instruments(camera and spectrometers) were developed by the USA. This was more of a bought mission.

If you are a toddler, you will have a tantrum if your mother wants to feed you or dress you because you want to do it yourself. You are old enough. Smart enough. right ?

Now if the UAE , or any country for that matter took this toddler trait with them into adulthood, it would be a disaster ! no one will learn anything from the other. No one will advance and develop through learning from the more experienced.

what I am trying to say is, for a country that is 49 years old only, i think this is pretty amazing Mashallah. A country that is not ashamed to learn from others expertise in certain fields.

Do you think the UAE 20-30-40 years from now will be MUCH more advanced and experienced with space related matters ? will it be manufacturing and launching from the rub al khalee desert ? very likely, actually, i can bet on it !

Good things take time. No need for negativity and trying to bring others down

also, are you Alliance or horde ? xD

Well it's much more better to spend their money on this rather other areas ..

Any expenditure on science is always good.
For a place like uae , with a good standard of living for the locals, the grind of science can only be made attractive by such endeavors.
It shows a forward looking administration.
India has a credible space program now but in 1983 , when rakesh sharma hitched a ride to the soyuz space station on a Russian vehicle, India had very few launches.
The sight of Sharma in low earth orbit must have inspired many in India to the sciences.
Unless you start , you go nowhere.
Sermon over.

Actually 100% Made in UAE spacecrafts/probes will indeed take some time but this mission will surely inspire many young Emiratis to look into this field especially schools, universities will now take up astronomy projects which will help in building up scientific eco system in UAE and by the end of this decade, and with the huge money back up, I am sure UAE will be a major space power of Asia by 2040. All the best to UAE!
