Emboldened militants set sights on Peshawar

I fear this work was done by foreign elements lurking in Pakistan, more light should be put on this issue.

Interceptor,

You are an intelligent individual - don't stick your head in the sand and delude yourself by passing the buck off onto "foreign elements".

The TTP led by B Mehsud took responsibility for this. Every journalist reporting from the area has put responsibility for this on the TTP.

This is the work of Pakistanis who call themselves Taliban. They slaughtered 28 innocent individuals for no reason. Whiel I understand that dialog has to be part of teh mix, how can you say to me with a straight face that were 28 members of your family slaughtered by a group of outlaws, you woudl still be asking for "dialog".

Bull -S-h-i-t.

This is nothing but a pathetic attempt to continue this charade of "our Muslim brothers can be shown the light and the right path".

On the issue of puppeteers, it is worth considering if these terrorists can operate without local support.

While the issue of foreign assistance is pertinent, local support also requires consideration to combat these terrorists.

Here we go again.....there all terrorist.
Groups attacking military forces are not terrorist........attacking civilians is terrorism.

Look AM I did not know who was responsible for the attack and that is on my part, however, there was a connection just a few days ago the Afghani warlords and AQ said that we too will attack Pakistan in case if Karzai does too. I felt this must have been linked to the killing of tribal elders.

Nothing Islamic about killing people, they are miscreants, its true the Peace talks are slow, and somethings are just elusive. B-Mehsud is an enemy of the state, he is running his private army killing people, I dont support him and neither do I say lets have dialogue and settle our differences with him, but what we need is that the GoP must cut their roots off before attempting something big, I see that as much more effective way of dealing with him, B-Mehsud has connections with AQ no doubt about,

Pakistan says it has paid 32m rupees ($540,000) to help four former wanted tribal militants in South Waziristan settle debts with al-Qaeda.
BBC NEWS | South Asia | Pakistan pays tribe al-Qaeda debt

This is where tax payers money goes the hell with that!!!

We need to starve the miscreants out not pay them, but starve them, the GoP is focusing on making Peace deals, its a give and take process.

I have not understood,

Attacking the Pakistan Army is not terrorism?

What is it then?

Insurgents?

They have not attacked civilians?

People like Baitullah Mehsud, Mangal Bagh, Mullah Fazlullah etc. deserve no dialog.

Any one who refuses to lay down arms in front of the state deserves no dialog.

They are murderers and anarchists, and threaten to destroy the foundations of the state.

Dialog can be had with those who lay down arms, and the Tribes in general, and that dialog should be had, and development in those areas done - while at the same time blowing the POS like Mehsud to pieces, because so long as the militanst maintain any capacity whatsoever to fight, they will not allow development to take place, and they will not allow the writ of the State to be imposed.

We have seen this in Swat, and we saw it in Waziristan with the slaughter of the peace committee. Dialog and force simultaneously is the answer.

Its good to konw that the new Pak govt is slowly taking a tough stance against terrorism.

They must keep aside the lawyers issue and concentrate on anti terrorism and curbing inflation.

Nawaj has to learn to be patient. There are more important things at hand.

Yeah so that makes them terrorists, because they are pretty good at chopping the heads of other tribals as well as civilians in main-land Pakistan.

Violations prompted military action: Gilani

By Zubair Azam

LAHORE: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday said the NWFP government had launched the military operation after militants violated the peace deal, stressing the government still believed in peaceful solution of issues.

Addressing a press conference at the State Guest house here, he said involvement of a foreign hand in aggravating the law and order situation in the tribal areas could not be ruled out. “Illegal activities in the tribal areas are primarily being carried out by foreigners, most of whom have come from the Central Asian states,” he added. He also said the Dr AQ Khan issue has been closed, saying nobody, not even the IAEA, had demanded access to the nuclear scientist.

The prime minister said maintaining law and order is a provincial subject and the NWFP government was conducting the military operation. He said the government had initiated a dialogue process with the tribal elders and made peace agreements with tribes which had opted to lay down weapons.

“Both sides must adhere to the agreement and if there is a violation, the provincial government and law-enforcing agencies are left with no other option but to take action against the violators,” he added.

He said public executions, kidnapping of minorities, razing of girls’ schools and bombing barber shops were acts that were tantamount to establishing a state-within-a-state and it was not acceptable to the government.

“These things resulted in an operation in areas where peace agreements have been violated,” he added. To another question about the government’s intentions to extend the operation, he explained the immediate problem was in Fata, Swat and adjacent areas of Peshawar. He said if the situation deteriorated elsewhere as a reaction, the NWFP government had the right to requisition the Army or the FC for its help.

He said it was the duty of the provincial government to maintain law and order, besides protecting the life and property of citizens. He said the coalition partners had been briefed on the situation by the chief of Army staff.

“The coalition partners have been taken into confidence over the operation,” he added. He stressed that the government would not compromise on Pakistan’s dignity, sovereignty and self-respect.

Explaining the three-pronged strategy of the government, Gilani said the first option was dialogue, the second was to address the root cause of the menace and the third was to launch development projects.

“In this regard, we want to provide health and education facilities in the region and build the Reconstruction Opportunity Zones,” he added. He said the use of force was the last option, adding, “We shall not exercise it.”

He said the government wanted to create awareness among the masses and asked the media to conduct public polls to ascertain people’s wishes. “You should write editorials and hold seminars to inform the people about development projects,” he said.

He said incidents like torching of PTDC hotel had had damaged the tourism industry in the country. About inflation and the government’s decision to further raise fuel prices, he said the current surge in prices was a global phenomenon. He said the government was giving a daily subsidy of Rs1.2 billion, which had been termed bad management by the country’s international donors.

“Our donors ask us why we have not passed on the effect to the consumers when governments in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India have done so,” he added. Maintaining that Pakistan was fortunate to have a rich agriculture sector, the premier announced that the government would focus more on this sector.

The prime minister said he would take the nation into confidence after the completion of 100 days in office of the PPP led coalition government. Punjab Senior Minister Raja Riaz, PPP leader Qasim Zia and the party’s Lahore chapter president Aziz Chan were also present on the occasion.

For all those who claimed that our policies will change, they can see clearly how much they have changed. Nothing has changed nothing will change unless we hold our elected officials responsible for what they promised.

Actually I believe they did try to change them....but the recent events have shown that there aren't that many options. Just got the news about the two blasts in Rawalpindi

I think that the action being taken is too little...too slow. I dont understand why the mainstream forces are not used.....and why not the airforce too...I know its high on damages, but why not evacuate districts one by one through checkposts and then use it. The militants don't care about civilian damage do they?

I'm guessing because people dont like to be ordered out of their own houses by anyone. Obviously they will wine and complain, they will do that weather we give the militants a free hand, or go after the militants or hold peace talks with them or evacuate the areas for heavy operations...
Besides for the media militants killing 20 civilians never makes as much juicy news as 'goverment kills 20 civilians'...

Guys that Mulla with Quaids Topi (Sorry dont know his name) of MMA is saying that government is trying to make this a big deal even though it very isn't.

He is a terrorist supporter. Can somebody deal with him please?

I concur with Webmaster.

It is time these terrorists and their sympathisers are taken to task.

I have not understood,

......NO.....they can be classed as tratiors, insurgents, militants ect.

They have not attacked civilians?

Have they put car bombs in marketplaces, attacked masjids, temples and church's......dont think so.

If we class them as terrorist ,where fighting the wrong kind of war and we will never win.
We have to get right what type of war we are fighting or they will be no end.....its a insurgency.........counter insurgency tactics are what are needed.
