Here we go..

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter that the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) will be available in a small closed beta test beginning next week.
  • In April, the CEO announced that the feature would be ready by the end of 2020 and would be available via subscription.
  • The company rewrote its FSD software stack so it would better recognize and label items the vehicle sees on the road.

After a complete rewrite of Autopilot and specifically the upcoming FSD (Full Self-Driving) feature, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has tweeted that a closed beta test of the system will be rolling out next Tuesday, October 20. But Tesla owners shouldn't rush out next week to check their cars, because the pool of vehicles that will get this update is very small. Musk tweeted, "This will, at first, be limited to a small number of people who are expert & careful drivers."

Limited FSD beta releasing on Tuesday next week, as promised. This will, at first, be limited to a small number of people who are expert & careful drivers.

FSD has been a long time coming for the company with promises of its release date slipping time and time again. Recently, the company almost completely rewrote the software stack, including how it labels items.

In April, Musk announced that self-driving capabilities would be available by the end of 2020 and that it would be available via subscription. The CEO also noted that the system would be able to get commuters from home to work most of the time with no interventions.

The company needs FSD to be fully functional before it deploys its fleet of robotaxis. Tesla has said it would like to have the self-driving taxis on the road next year in some markets.

There's no word on how long the closed beta will run before it's opened up to more Tesla owners, and a Tesla spokesman contacted by Car and Driver had no additional information to share. Self-driving is difficult to pull off, and even if Tesla's FSD is beta ready, it's likely still in need a quite a lot of fine-tuning before it's ready for the masses.

He also said that the tests will go on until a pedestrian is killed.

Reverse engineering reveals signs of FSD subscription coming to Tesla cars

According to a post that first appeared on r/TeslaMotors subreddit, Tesla might be planning to roll out its promised subscription service for the full self-driving feature.

In the Reddit post, the user u/Callump01 says he has reverse-engineered the Tesla mobile app and has found a page for a new subscription service.

The page doesn’t specify what the subscription is for but, Elon Musk speaking at the companies Q1 earnings call had said “we will offer Full Self-Driving as a subscription service, but it will be probably towards the end of this year”.

On the call, Elon didn’t elaborate how the subscription service will work. Possible options are a monthly payment as the company already does with its premium connectivity package. Or it could also offer a service where customers subscribe for a predetermined mile on autopilot.

Either way, this should be welcome news for anyone who is unable to pay the full $8,000 price of the FSD package or for people leasing their cars. On the same earnings call, CFO Zackery Kirkhorn said, “We do understand that some customers who have an ownership or have leased their vehicles did not purchase that option upfront. And so this will enable those customers to spread out the cost of ownership of FSD or subscription over time.”

But, tempering expectations Kirkhorn also added “financially, rolling the upfront purchase of the FSD option into a loan in the vehicle or a lease will be the least expensive plan on a monthly basis to own.

Elon Musk also seems to agree saying “buying FSD is an investment in the future. And we are confident that it is an investment that will pay off to the consumer”.

And we believe that is more true than ever. According to a tweet by Elon Musk, a fundamental architectural rewrite of the autopilot software will be released in a few weeks. The upgraded software is expected to enable a driving point to point without needing any intervention from the driver. This has the potential to increase the price of the FSD package significantly. Therefore, buying the entire package outright seems to be a better investment for anyone who can.

The FSD improvement will come as a quantum leap, because it’s a fundamental architectural rewrite, not an incremental tweak. I drive the bleeding edge alpha build in my car personally. Almost at zero interventions between home & work. Limited public release in 6 to 10 weeks.

I am thinking will it work better than waymo without LIDAR and other sensors? 😕

I am thinking will it work better than waymo without LIDAR and other sensors? 😕

The problem with Waymo and pretty much all self-driving companies (other than Tesla) is that they rely on prescanned detailed maps of the streets (like enhanced Google's street maps) as the basis for their driving software. So they basically can drive their cars on known rails and just concentrate on other cars and bystanders.

Tesla says they will design their cars with the "smarts" to drive down a street that has never been driven by anyone. It will eventually be smart enough to identify rain clouds and or backed up traffic a mile ahead of you.

yeah but without so many sensors how they are going to do it, and how well and how safe it will perform.
