physical access to any system, be it a ballot box or an EVM makes that system vulnerable.the system still relies on the idea that it takes time as well as oppurtunity to tamper with a single system.it also takes into account that many such EVMs will have to tampered with to rig an election.lastly it relies on the credibility of the indian election system, which has been accepted to be free and fair.
the results can be stored in a central database i think, and that secure transmission policies exist already.UMAC is certainly a good idea.Moreover a computer generated secret hash number can be given to the user, after which the computer destroys the record.then this hash number can be used as a primary key for a strictly read only database. not very hard...
