The IAF had signed a multi-billion dollar contract with the U.S. government and Boeing Ltd in September 2015 for 22 Apache helicopters.
In a major boost to the Indian Air Force’s combat capabilities, eight US-made Apache AH-64E attack helicopters are set to be inducted into the IAF on September 3, officials said on Monday.

Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa will be the chief guest during the induction ceremony, which will take place at the Pathankot Air Force station.

The AH-64E Apache is one of the world’s most advanced multi-role combat helicopters and is flown by the U.S. Army.

“Eight of the Apache attack helicopters are set to be inducted into the IAF, that will enhance the force’s combat capabilities,” a senior IAF official said.

The IAF had signed a multi-billion dollar contract with the U.S. government and Boeing Ltd in September 2015 for 22 Apache helicopters. The first four of the 22 helicopters was handed over to the air force by Boeing on July 27.

“By 2020, the IAF will operate a fleet of 22 Apaches, and these first deliveries are ahead of schedule,” Boeing had earlier said. The aerospace major said the AH-64E has the latest technology insertions, maintaining its standing as the world’s best attack helicopter.

“It is the only available combat helicopter with a spectrum of capabilities for virtually any mission requirement. For the AH-64 E, this includes greater thrust and lift, joint digital operability, improved survivability and cognitive decision aiding. It is uniquely suited to meet the commander’s needs, including reconnaissance, security, peacekeeping operations, and lethal attack — in both land and littoral environments — all without reconfiguration,” Boeing said.

. . . .
I though IA should have received these under their aviation arm. End user of this will be IA not IAF. So now if IA needs urgent support it will need to call in IAF just to use choppers.

I think the Army will get some choppers from follow on orders. But it is quite stupid the way it is. It was evident in 1962 wars, the lack of sync between IAF and IA. A CDS having theatre commands using IBG's should solve it.

awaiting the first crash.....1 , 2 , 3......

Why cannot the Russian Kamov Ka-52 helicopter be bought instead of this Apache ??

. .
IAF is mostly interested in the longbow radar rather than the whole platform itself, this gives this helicopter much better situational awareness. And the operational altitude is also higher for Apache.

Okay.

So is there no Russian counterpart to the Apache ??

I was thinking the same, it is the safest option but I think overall Apache is the most lethal option available.
Albeit sanction prone.

It was an open tender with other copters too and Boeing won ,as simple as that ,these are for IAF ,army aviation would also get 6 of it as of now

Maybe IAF was specifically looking for Western / American helicopter. @Skull and Bones mentioned two things earlier :

1. The Apache Longbow radar provides better situational awareness to the pilot. But maybe just the radar system could have been bought by IAF instead of the entire helicopter. Transfer of Technology to the Indian HAL / DRDO / NAL.

2. The Apache's operational altitude is higher than others.
