Dhaka, Aug 31 (bdnews24.com)—Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated amid festivity and religious fervor across the country.

Devotees joined prayers on Wednesday to seek divine blessings, peace and harmony as they ended a 29-day of fasting.

Tens of thousands of people have left the capital, Dhaka, to celebrate the biggest festival of the Muslims.

A three-day public holiday is in force.

The residents in Dhaka and elsewhere visited their families and friends, and many distributed candies and homemade sweets among neighbours.

The main congregation was held at the National Eidgah, adjacent to the Supreme Court, at 8:30am on Wednesday.
The country's biggest Eid congregation was held at Sholakhia Eidgah in Kishoreganj.

President Zillur Rahman, ministers, senior politicians and diplomats joined the congregation amid tight security at the national eidgah.

The khwatib of Baitul Mukarram Mosque, Moulana Mohammad Salahuddin, led the congregation.

Special arrangements were made for women at the maidan.
Wives of foreign diplomats and dignitaries took part in the prayers there.

The Dhaka City Corporation arranged 360 Eid congregations in the capital's 90 wards. A separate congregation was held at the playground of Dhaka University, taking the total number of congregations in the city to 361.

Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj, renowned for hosting the biggest congregation of the country, drew over 300,000 devotees this year.

The national flag was hoisted atop government and non-government offices on the occasion. Main city streets were also decorated with flags imprinted with 'Eid Mubarak' in Bangla and Arabic.

The president, the prime minister and the leader of the opposition have issued separate messages wishing peace and prosperity for the Muslims.
They also exchanged greetings with general people along with diplomats and politicians.

Like the preceding years, a special menu is being served in hospitals, jails, government-owned children's shelter homes, and other welfare centres, and shelter homes for the destitute people.

While newspaper offices are closed until Sep 1, state-run radio station Bangladesh Betar and television channel BTV, as well as the private stations, have been broadcasting special programmes. News updates are available round the clock on the bdnews24.com Website.
