In a dramatic press conference, the Israeli Defense Minister, who has experienced a defeat in his offence against Gaza, announces he will not run in the upcoming Israeli elections; Netanyahu says he respects Barak’s decision.

When the message went out at 9 A.M. on Monday that Defense Minister Ehud Barak was going to hold a press conference two hours later, the assumption was that he had already made a deal with Tzipi Livni to run on a joint ticket on January 22. At the very least, he would issue a call to the parties of the center-left to unite, offering them his services.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak, a main architect of Israel’s policy toward Iran’s nuclear programme, said in a surprise announcement on Monday that he was quitting politics and would not run in the January 22 national election.

“I have decided to retire from political life and not to run for the next Knesset … I will end my term as defence minister once the next government is established, in about three months,” he told a news conference.

Opinion polls had predicted a poor showing for the small party that Barak currently leads, Atzmaut. Barak failed to stop Palestinian Missile attacks during the 8 days war against Gaza.

So, Israel killed dozens of Hamas terrorists, destroyed most of their rocket stockpile, intercepted and took out hundreds of rockets fired by the terrorist organisation, but somehow Hamas defeated Israel?

No wonder some Arabs keep telling each other they defeated Israel in every single war.

Ehud Barak announces his resignation from political life

Defense minister says he has been considering quitting for some time, but Operation Pillar of Defense delayed his decision; will remain in position until new government is formed following elections.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced his intention to quit political life Monday morning in a press conference at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv.

Barak thanked the public for its continued support and said he will remain in his position as Minister of Defense until a new government has been formed following the coming Knesset elections in late January.

Barak added that he had been considering quitting for some time, but Operation Pillar of Defense delayed his decision, and subsequent announcement.

"I want to dedicate more time to my family. I feel I have exhausted dealing with political life, which has never been a passion of mine, and I feel there is room to allow other people to serve in senior roles in Israel," Barak said.
