India's submarine INS Sindhurakshak received help from Egyptian Navy when it encountered extreme bad weather and rough sea on its way back home after mid-life up-gradation in Russia.

The Sindhurakshak, a Russian Kilo Class submarine built in 1997 at Admiralteiskie Verfi shipyard in St Petersburg, underwent mid-life up-gradation.

The Egyptian Navy towed the submarine to Port Said along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in March, sources said.

Welcoming the gesture, Indian ambassador to Egypt Navdeep Suri

praised the professional handling by the Egyptian Navy.

In thank you cable to Egypt's Defence and Military Production Minister Gen Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, Suri said, "(Egyptian) Naval troops towed the submarine in a professional way to a safe Egyptian port", the official MENA news agency reported.

Thanks EGYPT:tup:

The very fact that no one mentioned, wahabi and salafi Mozlums so far with Egypt means that we ain't doing so bad. Peace has been created successfully after all.

Thanks Egypt.

already posted and discussed...why you guys post the same news again and again, without seeing that same news got posted or not??

The modernised submarine arrived in Mumbai on April 29 through the Northern Sea Route and stopped in ports, such as Cartagena, Spain, and Alexandria, Egypt.

So,.... it took over a month before the story came out that she got towed? :cuckoo:

Re. the being on the surface issue : isn't it the case that for 'innocent passage' through another country's territorial waters, submarines are required to be surfaced?

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982
Article20

Submarines and other underwater vehicles

In the territorial sea, submarines and other underwater vehicles are required to navigate on the surface and to show their flag.

Re the bad weather issue:
Not just surfaced submarines transiting in bad weather can experience bad rolls: under extreme surface weather conditions, submerged turbulence can also go very deep, down to as much as 400 feet. Waves can be so high that under certain conditions if you're near enough to the surface, you can actually be brought to the surface.

I didn't know that was possible. Is that a midget submarine? Looks kind of small.

At near 4000 tons submerged, a Kilo is substantially bigger than Pakistan's 2000 ton Agosta's .....

Here's a better pic of that ship, SS Sea Teal (Length: 180.0m Beam: 32.0m)

Actually, looking at the picture again there appears to be a man standing near the back of the sub. It's not a midget sub.

Quite impressive I must admit.

How many countries have this capability?

bro there is nothing to it. These are called Semi submersibles. they are normally used to transport oil rigs or barges or other items which cant be handled by even a heavy lift crane. the reasons being the weight or type of construction of the cargo.
Btw there are many private companies who operate such ships leave alone countries..the largest semisubmersible ship is supposed to carry arnd 50000 tons of any cargo that would be like carrying an medium size aircraft carrier.
