Egyptian government source: the technical path to the negotiations of the Dam Al Nahda became "dead"

90%? Pakistan & Egypt are a lot similar, certain aspects. Pakistan has a much greater population than Egypt, even it didn't get 90%.

Look at it this way.

Hypothetical situation:

If Egypt dumps a thousand tons of toxic waste in the river than who does it affect? Only Egypt.

If Ethiopia dumps a thousand tons of toxic waste in the river than who does it affect? Sudan and Egypt.

That's why Egypt has 90% share of the Nile. Get it now? Good.

Investors will make sure there is no threat to their investment. This isn't a plastic toy from the dollar store. The next loan Egypt will need from the WB or IMF? China & Italy have a huge share in those institutions.

China has massively invested in Egypt and its new capital and has set up entire cities in Egypt. Not only that but Egypt has the Suez Canal and is a massive strategic ally in both Africa and the Middle East. Countries like the UK, the EU and America have dumped billions of dollars in the Egyptian economy and military, you seriously think that they would throw all of that away and go to war with one of the most populous Arab nations over a stupid dam in Ethiopia that will eventually be poorly run anyway? HELL NO.

No one is going to feel bad for Ethiopia creating a reservoir from a river that passes through it but it doesn't have an right to?

Your right no one will feel bad because everyone would massively on Egypt's side. Your acting like Egypt has decided to completely wipe Ethiopia off the map when that's simply not true, we simply want to get rid of the dam. Ethiopians need to get electricity from elsewhere like Solar panels, if they are experiencing droughts then it is because of lot's of heat, no? Then why not develop solar power?

Also, can you stop striking through your comments, it's rather annoying my Ethiopian friend.

.
Bro Can you send links regarding Netenyahu confirming support for the Dam ?
What do you mean the nile war ended ?
The congo river project will take over 10 years to materialize thats if the political leadership in Egypt starts this project , besides the Sudanese government will reject it as long as the country is controlled by MB .

The only options Egypt currently is working on to increase its water resources are as follows

1) the 100,000 greenhouse project to reduce water on grown vegetables and fruits .
2) building dams and artificial lakes in the north to utilize rain water.
3) Mega waste water treatment projects to reuse sewage water , Egypt has potential to reuse 15 billion cubic meters .
4) Projects to build water destilation plants .

By the way Ethiopia wants to fill the dam over 2 years and Egypt suggested 5-10 years .
Just look for Nathanyahu's last visit to Ethiopia!

Yes, all these options are good and their projects are ongoing.. do not forget that the sad Al Ali guarantees a 2 to 3 years fresh water supplies to Egypt.. but due to nature and population growth.. at least the Nile share of Egypt should be guaranteed, otherwise it will become catastrophic..look at the prediction for 2025 that I have added in my last post..

Yes, I know that Egypt has compromised a lot in order to keep its share intact. I had data from 2010!

Look at it this way.

Egypt takes 3% to 5% (55.5 billion cu meters) of river water, from a total of 1,600 billion cubic meters of water annually in the Nile countries..

Egypt takes 3% or 5% (55.5 billion cu meters) of river water, from a total of 1,600 billion cubic meters of water annually in the Nile countries..

The cooperation between Israel and Ethiopia is regarding using high tech water saving technologies in Agriculture , it has nothing to do with the dam .

As mentioned before the Dam was mostly funded by local sources and China then build by an Italian company .

As I mentioned before the problem in this issue is Sudan , if you want to strengthen your position in this problem then Egypt has to pressure Sudan other than that Ethiopia will feel safe with Sudan acting as a buffer.

This problem has 3 options

1) Cooperating with Israel and USA which would force Ethiopia to accept a solution that meets Egypt needs .

2) Bomb the Ethiopian dam down which might result in international sanction and an expensive choice .

3) Install a friendly regime in Sudan by supporting opposition that is open to allowing an Egyptian base close to Ethiopia border . This option is not expensive and will serve purpose of deterring Ethiopia without attacking it .

Personally I prefer the first choice and the Ethiopian Dam problem will be solved within the expected century deal .

I know the topic of Israel is sensitive for many people here , but I do think Egyptian should only care about its own interests and Israel by the way needs Egypt way more than Ethiopia . Israel national security relies on maintaining good ties with Egypt and Egypt should use this card in enforcing what it wants on Ethiopia .

Look at it this way.

The expected grand deal with Israel and USA regarding the Palestinian case and cooperation on containing terrorism are far more important to these countries than Ethiopian dam . Egypt can tie cooperation on these 2 issues until the Ethiopian dam issue is solved and Ethiopia will be forced to accept any demands requested otherwise Egypt would bomb the dam .

And you believe that!? Helping a country that receives more than 900 billion cu meters of waters from rain alone every year to save some water in agriculture!!!

Israel proposed help to Egypt to save some 50 billion cu meters of water a while ago..on condition that Egypt splits the water with it..the proposal was obviously refused.. before that Israel has asked Egypt to let it use some of the Nile waters.. this happened during the 1973 war end negotiations, and it was also refused.. this will tell you How much the Nile card counts for Usrael..and its bitterness against Egypt..

Sorry this is a long post because I'm trying to answer all your points.

No one cares about someone else's national interests. I invest because I see a good deal.

Then they shouldn't be surprised if their investments turn into rubble. :-)

When Egypt demands 90% of the water from the Nile it's hard to feel for it. Research is looking at less ~3% impact on Egypt's electrical supply. Lengthen the life of dams downstream.

The impact on the Aswan high dam and electricity is not the issue. It's the shift in the water flow and the consequent imbalance to mostly agricultural and water needs while they fill that new dam in Ethiopia.

Egypt has rights to it's fair share, if those rights are infringed it has a case in the international court. Otherwise any military action is an act of war that will meet Egypt with condemnation.

If all diplomatic means are exhausted, then there really will be no choice. Unfortunately it's near the 59th minute of the 11th hour.

Having a rich arab sheikh by your side isn't enough when so much of your economy depends on tourism, tourists who are increasingly social justice warriors.

Just yesterday the UK announced new tourist increases to Egypt and Russia has reopened flights to Sinai few months back. Tourism is heading in the right direction thanks to Egyptian outreach and advertising in Europe and elsewhere. They're not sitting waiting for things to happen. Those that come to Egypt come to see the spectacular ancient Egyptian civilization and go the the Sinai for some of the most exquisite beaches and diving and fishing. This type is not the social justice warrior I can assure you. :-)

And BTW, besides the rich sheikh who is a very good friend, Egypt has another new, rich American friend at its side in the name of Donald Trump who's quite supportive of Sisi, not to mention the support Putin has given the Egyptian president in the past 4 years and especially the past 2. If you asked both, Putin and Trump who they would support in an endeavor like this, I don't think Ethiopia has much clout.

Russia, China and the US are HEAVILY invested in Egypt which is a regional power with arguably the most strategic clout in the ME. None of this will be risked over a dam in Ethiopia.

Egyptians would have been better served to look towards financing economic opportunities and eliminating corruption and wastes in the means of production. Over loans to project power. Not much faith in the Peace-deal?

Egypt's economy is blistering at an unprecedented rate. You should check the thread on Egypt's economy updates. The Nile water is also essential to Egypt's prosperity and economy, so it is, in fact, already doing what you're suggesting.

Egypt has also just brokered a Hamas' forfeit of ruling Gaza in favor of Fatah to unite the Palestinians into one to further peace with Israel. This is also unprecedented. Did you ever think Hamas would give up control of Gaza? Well, they did thanks to Egypt. How much leverage does that buy Egypt with regards to the US and especially Israel?
No one has honored the peace deal more than Egypt.
Do you realize how devastating that treaty has been to Egypt with regards to Muslim countries? It isolated Egypt from most Arab countries for the better part of 3 decades and it was viewed as a traitor and so much more. Yet we've honored it and then some and now everyone else is coming around and finally seeing that they should've joined us from the start instead of fighting us and alienating us. Funny how that worked out.

Ironically the greatest sources of water loss to the Nile is within Egypt itself.

While there is some truth to that, it's still irrelevant. What you do with the water that comes into your house is none of my concern even though I live in the same neighborhood and also benefit from the same water supply. Same thing applies in this case.

I actually support Aljazeera and don't stand with those who are against it. They should be able to run news and programs and it's up to our governments to prove them wrong if they are incorrectly portraying things. You don't have to worry about things like who the author is with me. If the content is legitimate and unbiased and makes sense, it doesn't matter to me who wrote it. I always try to be objective in all matters.

That being said, this is an old article written in 2014. Much has changed since then and there hasn't been any substantial, environmentally credible research done that has contradicted what Egypt has issued as to what the impact of the dam would be to the water supply and flow to Egypt. Ethiopia and the other upstream counties have been dancing around that and avoiding it because they know it doesn't exist.

Lets get to the crux of this, Egypt isn't going to take this to any international court because other upstream nations would challenge treaties they bound themselves due to colonial history. Where the British Colonial authorities effectively wrote a treaty among itself, on behalf of it's Egyptian holding and upstream British African colonies. (The treaty the modern States ripped up last year or early this year?)

That's fine. Treaty Shmeaty. In that case, we'll take matters in our own hands also, just like they ripped up those treaties.

The Nile isn't Egyptian. It belongs to every State it passes through.

Except we are the furthest downstream and will be affected the most. The Ethiopians haven't done nearly enough to assure Egypt and have basically given us the middle finger. If their approach was much more diplomatic and caring about potential impact, the situation wouldn't be where it is ATM. Well, that middle finger along with the hand, head and legs might get slapped pretty hard, unfortunately. They have to be very careful with something of this magnitude.

This would be a more neutral read and offers solutions to the issue that doesn't involve war/arbitration/negotiation:
http://e360.yale.edu/features/does_egypt_own_the_nile_a_battle_over_precious_water

Even older article but supports our claim.

"A dispute between Egypt and upstream African nations has brought to the fore a long-standing controversy over who has rights to the waters of the Nile. The outcome could have profound consequences for the ecological health of the river and for one of the world’s largest tropical wetlands."

That's another issue that hasn't even been properly addressed -- and that is the ecological impact -- all parties are guilty here (including us in Egypt) because they haven't paid enough attention to that potentially disastrous scenario because we're so concerned over just the humanitarian impact. There's a current study being done by a French group on the ecological impact to the river itself that I hope is released soon so we can see what and how the plants and animals (whom are also very important in this whole saga) erosion, migration, disease, climate change etc. will be affected.

These studies are usually done way before anything as substantial as a dam on the longest river in the world is built but did the Ethiopians, Chinese or Italians think of that?

One fundamental fact that most people ignore when they side against Egypt is the difference between rain based agriculture and irrigation based agriculture..Egypt receives around 12 mm of rain annually while most of the Nile source countries receive up to 1000 mm annually, wheat cultivation needs around 400 mm which countries like Sudan gets annually, and they all should be leading in that Area.. but alas, they are not! Egypt is then an irrigation agriculture based country, while all the other Nile countries, down to Sudan are all rain based agriculture countries..

This Dam project that is supposed to produce up to 8000 MW of electricity, mainly for export, has failed in its main objective, because Egypt who was supposed to be -along with Sudan- a customer for that electricity, has a surplus of its own that it can export now..not only that, Egypt has helped build the biggest DAM in Africa on the Congo river, hence checkmating Ethiopia & Co bad intentions towards Egypt and Arabs in general.. this Ethiopian and its friends gang has stated before that they have the right to sell water like others have the right to sell Oil.. a statement that speaks for itself as far as how jealous they are from Gulf countries and Egypt, despite huge investments and help by the GCC and even Egypt in some vital projects in their countries (there is also the religious dimension that I am omitting here, because we already have the South Sudan separation as an obvious example)!
The other "investor" is Usrael with $4 billion in projects, but not even with its own money, it has just gathered a consortium of European an American companies to invest there..but since they provide weapons too, they succeeded in attracting these "high-tech" weapons hungry countries to their side.. (I am confining this to the middle eastern investments, so to see the local picture, since China and others had poured in some investments too)..

The conclusion from all these facts spell animosity..be it this Dam _others might be coming too, up to 3 new dams in Ethiopia_ or the words used by heads of states of the Nile source countries.. But Egypt is playing its cards wisely.. As Sun Tzu said: the acme of skill is to subdue the enemy without fighting ..

I think within 20 years from now the world will resort to distilled Sea Water for agriculture , currently the price per cubic meter is 50 us cents but I guess in 20 years this price will reach 10-15 cents and make it economical to grow strategic crops such as wheat using distilled water . Currently in Egypt and Europe there are farms that utilize distilled water for growing expensive vegetables and fruits .

The video below is about Egyptian Company manufacturing greenhouses for 100,000 greenhouse project .

The video below is about Spanish greenhouse company that Egyptian company will acquire from know how in building Greenhouses . The greenhouses in the video are a sample of how the 100,000 project will look like .

Egypt Distillation plant projects , by the way AOI has produced before distillation plants .

That was great. You see a lot of these greenhouses here in the US, especially in the northern parts of the country where there's more of a colder climate year-round than a warmer one. The traditions of only open farming and cultivating enough during the warm, summer months to last through the winter is a thing of the loooong past now lol. There's even seasonal bypassing of certain fruits an vegetables with all these new techniques and innovations in agriculture. And even in the US, despite rain and snow and whatever type of precipitation that occurs year-round, there's still a need to conserve water and use it wisely. This is good stuff.

From all Black African nations out there, Ethiopian people are the most respected in the West. They're Christian and poor. In other words: If you attack them, you'll face harsh consequences. Even the Chinese have significant amount of investment in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government received loans worth over 13 billion USD.

You cannot simply attack them. You need partners within Ethiopia... I hope you understand what I'm talking about.

The west never cared about Christrians or African as a whole . They enslaved Africans for over 5 centuries and still prosecute and loot their natural resources until today .

The West did the following things against Christian African

1) France and USA supported the Muslim north against Chrisian south in Ivory Cost between 2011-2014 resulting in overthrowing Christrian president .

2) France Supported Idris Dibbi and Muslim north against Christian south in Chad .

3) The West supported Communist Ethiopian party in 1990s against the traditional christian orthodox Amhara community whom dominated Ethiopia for the past 1000 years .

4) The West invaded Iraq and took down a secular regime in Iraq which had a catholic christian vise president which resulted in Iraq losing its strong 5 million christian community which escaped abroad.

5) The west supported the Kurds in taking over Assyrian christian lands in Iraq and Syria .

6) The west did not intervene to save the catholic maronite community from Hezbollah and Iran domination .

7) The west bombed Christian orthodox Serbia to the ground and gave Kosovo to Muslim Albanians .

8) The west did not take action against Turkey when it attacked and took over 37% of Cyprus .

9) The west left Ethiopia to face famine the past 3 decades which lead to the death of over 3 million people .

10) The west left the catholic tutsi minorities in Burundi and Rowanda to be slaughtered and killed , over 1.5 million were killed .

I can keep on going , the West only cares about their own interests and they only play the minorities card when it suits their Agenda . They will not risk their strategic relations with Egypt which is important for their Economic interests and security for the sake of a Dam that does not bring any economic benefits to the west in any shape .

The West is looking for gas and oil , strategic trade routes and associated energy hubs non of which landlocked Ethiopia has .

Egypt is not against the Dam , its only demands the filling period of this dam , the longer the period then the less temporary water supply loss Egypt will face in the next 5 years .

The European union will enforce a deal on both countries which will involve a compromise from both sides as Europe cannot afford to lose its strategic relationship with Egypt .

Egypt is very important in stopping illegal immigration from Africa and cooperating with Western intelligence in tracking

France and Germany would not have sold Egypt sophisticated hardware such as Rafaale planes, corvettes , frigarits , carriers and submarines with friendly payment terms if they were not in alliance . The West wants Egypt to secure their southern sea borders

By the way Germany alone supported Egypt with 9 billion loan to build 3 mega power plants each one 4800 MW and France for the past 3 decades supported Egypt in Financing its Subway in Cairo . European development bank has been funding until today major Water supply and sewage treatment plants to support Egypt development .

Egypt has always been valuable to the west as acts as their gateway to the rich sources of energy in the Arabian gulf and recently gas discoveries in Eastern Meditteranean has increased geopolitical value of Egypt.

Egypt , Cyprus , Greece and Israel signed important gas deals which will deliver natural gas to the European union using Egyptian LNG plants which will liquify natural gas from cyrpus and israel fields .

I can keep on going about the importance of Egypt , no one understand its except the pragmatic West . Egypt is also important in the new European strategy to contain Turkey in Eastern Meditteranean and most European business will eventually transfer their investments from Turkey to Egypt thanks to Erdogan stupid policies in supporting terrorism in the West and attempts to dominate it via Turkish and Muslim minorities .

Almost 70% of your provided information is wrong for example Serbian war. Most of Bosnian Muslims died because of USA's treachery and their fragile agreements with Croatians. I wonder who gives you whole this weird information!!!?

OnTopic, Israel is the main actor behind these dams. They will keep weakening Egypt despite That guy Sisi's words at UN summit.
https://dailynewsegypt.com/2016/07/09/israel-support-ethiopia-developing-water-resources-netanyahu/

The article speaks with high conservatism but at least points at the truth behind Ethiopian dam-developments.

One can see the truth here : What does Israel's military partner , however not official , thinks about that dam project, :

Hey, MB, Qatar and Turkey were also responsible for dinosaurs' extinction not only that dam. :omghaha:

I did not add the current conflicts nato is facing on the following fronts.

1) European currently is facing a threat from Russia on the Eastern side .
2) Israel and USA are now close to entering a new cold war with Iran after the end of Isis .
3) North Korea threat to Western interests in the Far East .
4) The rise of terrorism in Europe and far right groups which currently threaten to bring down European union .
5) The threat of China's Economic and Military power which now posses a threat to the Western dominance over natural resources and world trade routes .

You think they will leave all of this and focus on a dam in a landlocked country ?

That was great. You see a lot of these greenhouses here in the US, especially in the northern parts of the country where there's more of a colder climate year-round than a warmer one. The main reason that lead to the building of the dam was the black revolution funded and supported by Turkey and Qatar back in 2011 against Egypt . Ethiopia used this chance to build their dam and they were encouraged by the Qatari funded regime in Sudan .

Anyway what happened has happened and Egypt is working with Europe and Ethiopia to solve this issue . Anyway Qatar and the MB will be paying a price for all of this mess and they have no one to blame but themselves .

In short, west supports all sides, that's why they are controlling Africa like a backyard. Africans killing each other while west supports all sides.

Serbian War I was very specific , I talked about Kosovo not the Bosnian War . Kosovo was given to Albanian Muslims and Serbia was bombed to submission to give it up .

The problem with dams is because of MB Sudanese position , if they accepted Egypt proposal to open an air-base close to Ethiopia borders to act as a deterrent.

Thankfully Egyptians know their true enemy is Qatar , if it was not for their funding and harboring of terrorists MB group non of this mess would have happened .

Ethiopians as a nation are far better than any Arab MB member , the amount of hate MB members have against Egypt cannot be estimated , they are willing to cooperate with anyone just to harm and destroy Egypt.

If Nasser back in 1956 rejected Sudan independence from Egypt and remained neutral regarding other international disputes Egypt would have been in a much better position today .

The West will remain the main partner for Egypt and both sides have reached deals regarding Libya and Eastern Meditteranean , the water nile issue will be solved to .

Look man! Qatar is less than nobody!. You are exaggerating about that little country. How powerful they were to intervene in Egyptian affairs?!!! It's not logical. I don't want to open the case of Sheiks around Persian gulf, it is conspiracy  but believe me Qatar has less than zero ideological power to intervene in Egyptian affairs. That's an insult to Egypt

It is obvious, because Sisi's court has sentenced their religious leader to execution not only once but twice . Sisi should start working with his own countrymen and Muslim neighbors instead for executing all of their scholar. This will end up with begging Israelis and you know that.

Didn't know this. I must search about it. Any credible source would be appreciated

And i sincerely hope Egypt never approaches Libya considering other N.African players. It is dangerous
However with Morsi it could be useful but with Sisi, it will be a fight ring of super powers, would make Africans the scapegoats

West is not solution for this water crisis, Egypt needs nuclear energy more than anything as of now.

Egypt is very important in stopping illegal immigration from Africa and cooperating with Western intelligence in tracking terrorist cells infiltrating Europe .

You got me wrong. It doesn't make sense to debate with someone who always reacts emotional.

I agree Qatar as a country is worthless but their financial strength is the problem , as you can see qatari money resulted in the destruction and partition of Syria and Iraq . The MB is a strong organization and they have members all over the world including the west , when you combine Qatar financial capability with MB manpower then your dealing with a dangerous enemy and ofcourse with Turkey supporting them to increase its influence in the region .

The problem is only with Ethiopia which can be solved easily without a war there are currently negotiations between both countries and now the European union will be part of it to end it . The chance of war is 1% and it will be strike using Rafale, both Ethiopia and Egypt dont share a border so how can they go to a war ?

The MB are a backward sectarian group , if they continued ruling Egypt then the country would have been partitioned between Christians and nationalist muslims on one side and MB clowns and their salafi allies .

MB rule in Sudan was a disaster which resulted in the south secede and now they have darfur , eastern sudan , blue nile and kordofan states attempting to follow suit .

Egypt supports Haftar in Eastern Libya only by training , arming and providing air cover for his forces . He now controls Eastern Libya and kicked out islamsts from the main city Benghazi and major oil fields . Egypt has achieved its main objectives in Libya and have the freedom to strike any arms convoy inside Libya approaching its borders .

I dont think Egypt will or needs to send ground troops to Libya and it will not happen unless there is an international mandate from UN . Egypt will never go to a direct war except against Sudan if they annul the 1959 Nile agreement between Sudanese and Egyptian governments which divides nile water between them after it leaves Ethiopian border .

As I said before this issue has been given far more than what its worth , there are many countries around the world that were able to reach agreements regarding water sharing such as Pakistan and India over the indus river , Brazil and Paraguay over Amazon river and Mexico and USA .

This dispute is not over land or religion which makes solving it much easier . The west is not interested in this dispute as it neither involves gas or oil and they will force both sides into an agreement as they have far more important issues to deal with .

You got me wrong. It doesn't make sense to debate with someone who always reacts emotional.

I responded with facts , the West only cares about their own interest . The christian card is only used when it suits their interests . They were engaged mostly in conflict involving Countries that have oil and gas or on major energy transit routes like Syria .

If Ethiopia was rich in oil and gas then I would have agreed with you , its simple math .
