Egypt’s Sisi says army will defend Gulf Arabs in case of direct threat — newspaper

Military personnel from Arab states participate in the joint military training exercises, Arab Shield-1, in Egypt, on Saturday

CAIRO — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi said the army will come to the defence of Gulf Arabs if they face any direct threats, a pro-government newspaper said on Tuesday.

Youm7 newspaper also quoted Sisi as saying in response to a question on US sanctions on Iran: “Instability affects us all and any state that has instability affects all of us.”

Sisi’s Egypt is aligned with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, joining their boycott of Qatar last year and opposing Iran’s regional influence.

“Our Arab peoples must remain aware and have true consciousness of what the region is going through,” Youm7 quoted Sisi as saying at a youth forum in the Red Sea city of Sharm Al Sheikh.

“We stand by our brothers in the Gulf wholeheartedly and if Gulf security is directly threatened by anyone, the Egyptian people, even before their leadership, will not accept that and will mobilise forces to protect their brethren.”

Sisi also said Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait “need to be together more and their peoples should support the security and stability of their countries”, state news agency MENA reported.

The five countries are among eight Arab nations involved in joint military exercises that began in Egypt on Saturday in a move that could evolve into a regional pact to counter Iran’s influence.

Answering a question on the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Sisi said Saudi Arabia was “bigger than someone shaking its stability”, according to MENA.

“We must all wait for the investigations into the case because the media has not had a positive role and we must trust the wisdom and bravery of King Salman,” he added.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist critical of the Saudi government and its de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, disappeared at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Saudi officials initially insisted Khashoggi had left the consulate, then said he died in an unplanned “rogue operation”. The kingdom’s public prosecutor Saud Al Mojeb later said he was killed in a premeditated attack.

All arab armies are useless.

It is NOT about the hardware.

It's a structural problem. Arab armies are tools for dictators to maintain their hegemony. They aren't designed to face threats with an independent professional doctrine.

Yet there are Pakistanis out there who still think that they have any stake in the defense of Gulf countries

Yes,I very much agree.
However that doesnt mean that arabs cant fight, for instance as we saw back in 2006 hezbollah fought extremely well and were able to stop the israelis, who no doubt thought that this invasion would just be a replay of the other invasions,in their tracks.
Ultimately what is vital here is good leadership at all levels, and this is where the arab regimes usually fall flat on their faces as there is a real tendency to prize loyalty to the regime over actual ability which has usually had pretty bad results on the battlefield. There also seems to be a tendency to buy very flashy expensive weapons, yet there seems to be little effort made to train the forces,be they front line troops or top brass,to use these weapons effectively and in addition there seems to be very little learning from past mistakes, one only has to look at the utterly abysmal performance of the gulfie forces in yemen or the repeated mistakes that the saa kept making over and over again for the first 4 years of the terrorist insurgency in syria.
One also gets the real impression that the arab regimes, especially the gulfies, view their militaries as a means of keeping the population in line and holding on to power, but at the same time they also fear their own militaries for their potential and past history of overthrowing unpopular regimes and seizing power for themselves,so they prefer a loyal military even if it means that its an incompetent one with very poor performance.Ultimately its this schizophrenic love/hate relationship with the military that by and large has crippled the arab armies and robbed them of their military potential while making them utterly reliant on foreign governments both for weapons and logistical support.
This is all part of the dreadful price of political and economic vassalage.:tsk:

Hezbollah is an outlier and not really a state operated military. Hezbollah came about in part due to the failure of the Lebanese national army to defend the country.

My point wasn't about if arabs can fight or not.

It is about how Arab militaries are structured. Their unit level leaders such as captains or higher are not given the authority to take any action or battlefield based decisions without direct control and command from the top.

The military leaders do not trust their own unit managers because of coup threats and because their primary role is to protect the regime and not the country.

Arab armies may have all the toys... They have none of the professionalism, structure, or training to win wars.

All Arab armies combined lost against tiny Israel. Arab armies couldn't defeat ISIS. Arab armies cant even defeat Houthis. Whenever a "mighty" Arab country got wrecked by US or Israel, Like Libya, Syria, Iraq or when Israel massacres Palestinians. The rest of the mighty Arab armies drinks tea with Bush, Netanyahu or whoever is/was in power. The only thing Arab armies are good at is buying expensive junk from US.

Hezbollah is not an Arab army. It is created by, trained by and funded by Iran. It's more a branch of IRGC than anything Arab.

PS: No hate on Arabs.

Just out of curiosity. I am no military expert. Far from it. But I am curious to know, how Egypt is planning to defend the gulf countries. Do they plan to fly from Egypt, over the red sea. Land and refuel in KSA. Then fly over the Persian Gulf, all the way to Iran, casually bomb us and fly back to KSA. All unnoticed. Or are they planning to use Iraqi airspace unnoticed? Or are they planning to send warships to the gulf and get wrecked? Not to mention that a few BMs can wipe out the gulf countries.

No,hezbollah isnt an arab army but the lebanese which make up hezbollah are arabs,so how is it that a force that is not quite an army but certainly more than a militia was able to fight successfully and check israel when the regular arab militaries performance throughout the last 70 years has been so dreadfully poor?,is it only irans influence that made all the difference?,surely to god not.The answer of course is effective training and leadership, especially leadership, which sadly the current crop of arab states lack both at a political and military level.....altho the real problem here as always lies with the rotted out regimes themselves.A truly sad state of affairs.....if you`re an arab, but what oh what is the solution,as always that is the real question....
I would suspect that the egyptian government has given no real thought as to what actual military operations in the pg would entail or even whether egyptian military participation would even be a realistic prospect under the possible circumstances, these statements in typical blustering fashion are meant purely for political consumption only, and are very likely only intended just as further shows of *** kissing political support for the saudis after their utterly brainless and incompetent murder of khashoggi, rather than any real guarantee of actual military support.
Lastly I must admit I do really get a good chuckle out of these egyptian references to the looong dead concept of pan arabism/arab unity ie "gulf brothers" or "arab peoples"[lol!],does anyone still actually believe in that old crap, especially when its these clowns that are the ones spouting it?[lol!]

PS:
I dont hate arabs either, instead I feel equal parts of both pity and contempt for the arabs, both due to the horrible state the arab world is currently in....and the role that the arabs themselves have played in this, not only in bringing this horrible situation about, but also in allowing this deplorable state of affairs to continue to persist for as long as it already has.

It seems Sisi threatens Iran with no reason this time. He threatens Turkey the same way cause of Greek-Turkey hydrocarbon disagreement in E. Mediterranean. As being a tool, He should give credit of where It is due. His mission that is charged by his masters is bigger than his height.

Actually he indeed gives credit where It is due

Then why is it that the only successful arab militas are trained and funded by Iran. Remember how Iraq army fled and surrendered to ISIS? Then Qasem Soleimani went to Iraq and organized the PMU which became both Kurdish separatists and ISIS nightmare? Saudis with all the money in the world and with support of Arab states, US and Israel managed to create the "mighty" Arab coalition that is literally useless. While Iran, with no support, with sanctions and all, even unable to buy any weapons other than Soviet or North Korean junk. Managed to create two of the most successful Arab militias ever. One even defeating Israel in war. So to answer your question. Yes, I believe Irans influence made absolutely ALL the difference.

I'll say again, I really have no hate for Arabs, but the facts are that their Armies are useless. They are good for nothing else than buying American junk, paying protection money to their white and jewish masters. But this is because of their useless dictators not the people themselves.

120 Israeli soldiers and 1k+ hizbullah members dead with most of south lebanon destroyed, real win

1k+ civilians you mean. And south lebanon is nothing more than villages and village people. But only a jew would brag about killing civilians and destroying villages and farmland.

Anyway.... No need to go into detail. You launched a full scale war to destroy Hezbollah in fear of how rapidly they were growing. You got nothing you wanted and eventually you had to surrender. Now Hezbollah is stronger than ever before. But you go on and call that a win.
