Well, Gazelle's a piece of sh.t but Sina isn't a mountainous area
not by our standards anyway
Since Egypt and it's surrounding area is only consistent with a flat desert They can stick with one type of heavy attack helicopter. On the other hand T129 TUC2 configuration will have avionics that are equal to Apache block III made by Aselsan so it may be worth having a separate supply line for high performance and low maintenance costs.
I must say that they don't have a good procurement policy. Someone should go teach them the meaning of standardization.
They followed standardization long time ago until they got sanctioned twice by the soviet union between 1962-1967 and from 1975 until the fall of soviet union , as for the west they got sanction before between 1955 until 1978.
Imagine a country sanctioned by west , East and Arab countries before , how do you think would they adopt standardization
Egypt was the only country to be kicked out twice from the Arab league .
Given what their country has been through working with multiple suppliers is the safest way . Unlike other Arab countries Egypt mostly goes for Joint ventures with major suppliers and licensed production in addition to the own systems they developed " through reverse engineering or based on existing systems " .
Egypt also unlike other Arab countries started developing its unconventional capabilities since 1970 with support from china until today and previous collaboration with Argentina in the 1980s " condor project " they ended up producing ballistic missiles with 2000 km range . the chemical weapons used by Saddam against the kurds during 1980s were supplied by Egypt .
Egypt is not a rogue state like Iran which made the USA tolerate their ballistic and biological weapons production .
For a poor country country like Egypt I think their policy is quite smart .
As for T-129 it is mainly driven behind their desire to assemble and overhaul their own light helicopter . Egypt would only take the T-129 deal if it involved some TOT and assembly work in addition to the ability to overhaul these helicopters.
By the way Egypt Apache fleet and F-16 were payed for by the USA 1.3 billion yearly aid which was given to Egypt under the Camp David agreement for peace with Israel .
For instance when Egypt payed from its own budget for the Abram tanks in 1980s they insisted on TOT and Assembly work , Today Egypt manufactures most spare parts of its Abram tank including the technology transfer it got from USA on sensitive anti armor technology for the tank.
They also redesigned and upgraded various Russia system with assistance from major USA suppliers like their Ramses-2 tank .
For a poor country like Egypt with limited natural resources they do spend their money well .
Egypt anyhow made a mistake for letting the F-16 becoming the backbone of their airforce, but this was a result of Mubarak police . The Egyptian army is currently looking for a capable multi-role from China but no one knows what they will go for .
I know that Turkey has F-16 source codes and has been overhauling the aircraft for quite a while , by the way 46 of Egypt's F-16 were built by TAI . Maybe in future Turkey might help Egypt overhaul their F-16 and integrate weapons from Turkey helping Egypt to save costs on their 240 F-16 fleet .
I think that might be one of the main reasons Egypt military has been in the last two years moving closer to Turkey , after all American Air-craft are hard to over-haul , like Iran with their F-14 , even though USA sold them spare parts worth 2 billion dollars in 1988 at the end of Iraq war , until Today Iran failed in operating it and ended up only painting them and running it on runways.
