Eritrea is becoming the 'military base' hub of Africa.

Iran, Sudan, UAE, Russia and now Egypt.

It has been like this for thousands of years. A lot of the past empires fought a lot of wars over the region and controlled the coast of Eritrea for an obvious reason (never the mainland but the coastal region) - Ummayyad, Ottoman, Portuguese, Egyptians, British, Italians, French, USA etc...

Same for Djibouti. Both and Yemen hold the entrance to the Red Sea, they're like the gates that can close and open. It attracts regional/world powers and this is why all three neighboring countries have so many foreign bases.

First it says a military base, then naval forces; My take on it is some naval forces and majority marines..or a new naval force all together..

This number is highly unlikely but possible if we stationed some paratroopers, marines, rapid deployment, air force and of course navy.

It would make very little sense to station such a large number of forces there. The infrastructure to house and support such a number would be far too high. It would also make neighbouring nations quite jumpy.

What makes more sense is to have a permanent but small force on rotation continuously deploying for maritime patrol, counter piracy, and humanitarian work on the Horn while also supporting Yemen ops. But at the same time also build capability to significantly upsize the scale of forces deployed should there be an operational need.

There are indications that the Egyptian base will be operated in conjunction and coordination with the KSA and UAE bases.. That is why I have pointed to the uncalled for "warning" to the UAE and KSA by Ethiopia and the consequent answer of a new approved base in Eritrea of an Egyptian military base with a substantial number of troops.. one should always try to read between the lines somehow..

I agree 30000 is the population of a large town and there is absolutely no need to station such large numbers I think 3000 is about right for what the base is supposed to do.
