The Sinai Provine, an IS-affiliated militant group, has announced in a statement its responsibility for the Sinai attacks in (Archive photo from Libya)

In an official statement released by the Egyptian Armed Forces, 17 Egyptian soldiers were reported killed, in addition to 13 more who were injured. The statement added that 100 militants have been killed, in addition to destroying 20 of the militants’ vehicles.

As the armed conflict dragged on in Egypt’s North Sinai throughout the day, figures of casualties and fatalities have wavered from one source to another. According to state-owned Al-Ahram, the casualties among the Egyptian forces had reached 60 between injured and killed. Meanwhile, the Egyptian military has stated that all terrorist locations in North Sinai have been destroyed. So far, 90 terrorists have been killed, Sky News reported.

However, independent newspapers, such as Shorouk and Youm7, have reported that the death toll among the Egyptian forces has amounted to 64 , while Reuters reported 50 deaths among civilians and soldiers.

According to Associated Press, a security source who spoke under the condition of anonymity stated that as the conflict escalated, Egyptian soldiers have been held captive, while armored vehicles and weapons have been claimed by militants during their raids on several military checkpoints across the Sinai Peninsula.

Nevertheless, security sources in Sinai have deemed the news of captivity uncertain due to all phone and internet connections being cut off in the conflict zone, reported Al-Masry Al-Youm.

As the Egyptian military and security forces continue battling the militant groups, successive explosions have been heard on the outskirts of Sheikh Zuweid, while F16 fighter air crafts have been reported to track down the terrorist militias, reported Al-Ahram.

In light of the terrorist attack in Sinai, Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb said that Egypt is officially “in a state of war”, in what is considered to be the first official government statement since the eruption of the attacks.

Earlier today, the Sinai Province, an IS-affiliated militant group, has announced in a statement its responsibility for the Sinai attacks in Sheikh Zoweid, Al-Arish and Rafah which have been ongoing since the early hours of Wednesday.

The statement claims raiding over 15 Egyptian military checkpoints using light weapons, heavy armament and RPGs. In addition, Sinai Province have announced the execution of three “martyrdom operations” across Arish and Sheikh Zoweid.

Egypt’s North Sinai has witnessed a wave of attacks since the ouster of Morsi in July 2013. On Tuesday, two children were killed when a rocket reportedly fired by militants struck their home.

The story is developing.

The entire World is going through a bad phase now, crisis situations everywhere.

This is terrible. Slowly the flame initiated by Bush's invasion of Iraq in 2003 is now creeping throughout the middle east and burning all in the way (all but israel of course).

Of course, because Israel is the only non muslim country in the region. And hence, its people are impervious to jihadi influence.

If US plans go ahead according to schedule (and they will) Egypt will be thrown into a civil war, something like Syria but on a smaller scale (could spiral out of control). Sisi is a weak statesman, he will not be able to fully hold Egypt together.

Jordan too. I think by 2016 we will see things start to heat up in Jordan as well. Basically all Sunni majority countries will be at risk. But Jordan and Egypt are more fertile and their loss more critical.

Not sure about Jordan because they always been a loyal US puppet, US actually needs Jordan to train its own terrorists, Jordan is basically a huge US training ground.

I would replace Jordan with Saudi, as time passes we will see Saudis more and more in trouble. IS has a dangerous presence there.

These countries are on the US hitlist

1.Egypt
2.Saudi
3.Persian gulf states
4.Libya
5.Tunisia
6.Algeria

(I have not included Iran because they cant do any !hit but the rest of the countries in ME and North Africa are in danger.)

Jordan is actually much more in danger. US does not mind sacrificing its puppets if this advances its strategy. The days of Jordan are numbered. It is a poor country running on aid with a population that is radicalized. US is actually getting tired of these bunch and wants to move on, letting these states to fall.

Libya is already hit and will not again become a functioning state in this century.

Algeria will stand strong since they have a strong army which knows the reality of the problem (they already have defeated the Takfiri forces once before in 90's).

Tunisia is an interesting case to watch since they have a large secular liberal francophone society pitted against the Takfiri ideologues. The battle is going to be fierce.

PG states are too lilliputian to matter.

Saudis are too critical to American strategy. But this does not mean, US is happy with Saudis. US is just preparing the ground for a kind of shift in Saudi Arabia. Whether this will be in the form of an internal military coup or a palace coup or even the break up of Saudi Arabia to smaller countries, is yet to be decided. What is important though is the fact that US does not want the status quo.

Iran will remain safe since this whole instability is running on political failures and fractures within Sunni Islam that started by termination of Ottoman empire and the Moghul empire. Iran just have to secure itself and continue growing while the Sunni world decides its own future on various battlefields.

Good points, agreed... to me it doesnt matter who is next in line but the total US project for the Middle East. And i agree about our own country, we have a stable society that dislikes violence and is keen on advancing. With the sanctions gone soon nothing will stop us from growing further to our real potential.

. . .
When you are on the US hitlist and are their puppet at the same time you wont have any chance against the US backed terrorists.

ISIS is highly overrated ;A well armed and motivated military
like Egypt can sort it out

US is not supporting ISIS

ISIS will win only if it has support of majority of common people ; which it does not have

Yes. But Iran's enemies also know these and that's why Iranians have to remain vigilant. See this: What to Do About an Imperial Iran | Foreign Policy

You do not understand. The power of groups of Isis or Taleban or Boko does not come from their military superiority or their ideological sophistication. Their power comes from a kind of disillusionment in Sunni world on matters of politics, judiciary and legitimacy of state. The roots of this disillusion is deep in Sunni societies and the Sunni thinkers have not yet been able to solve it whether on theoretical ground or in practice. Rest assured that Isis even has support within the ranks of Egyptian military otherwise they would not have been able to do such brazen acts.

It is not the army that makes or breaks a nation but the society.

Scratch Egypt, Saudi and all gulf states off that list. American ME policy is dictated by Israel and its interests. Any country on good terms with Israel is on good terms with America even if there are only puppet dictatorships and monarchies. If Israel is at odd with these countries, no one, not even America can save them. The Israelis have to be on good terms with all Sunni countries around them.
