Designed as multimission surface combatants, the KDX-I destroyers feature self-defence capabilities and superior fire power to strike surface combatants, submarines and aircraft.

The design incorporates sensors, armament, fire control and propulsion systems of US and European origins.

The ships are capable of operating in multithreat environments and can conduct operations either independently or as part of a combat fleet.

The class has four protection zones offering nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protection for the crew.

KDX-I has an overall length of 135.5m, beam of 14.2m and a draft of 4.2m. The full load displacement of the ship is 3,885t to 3,900t. Each ship can complement a crew of 286.

Command and control systems on the Republic of Korea Navy operated ships
Gwanggaeto the Great Class is equipped with SSCS Mk 7 combat management system (CMS) from Alenia Marconi Systems (now BAE Systems Insyte).

The CMS includes ten multifunctional consoles and receives combat information from shipboard sensors. It evaluates threats, prioritises targets, plans weapon engagement and executes as well as monitors weapons engagements.

Missiles and naval gun systems onboard Gwanggaeto the Great Class destroyers
Two quadruple launchers mounted on the main deck level amidst the funnel and the helicopter hangar can launch eight RGM-84 Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles.

RGM-84 can carry a 224kg warhead for a maximum range of 124km. The anti-aircraft warfare capability is provided by 16 RIM-7P Sea Sparrow short-range anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems.

The main gun fitted on the forecastle is an Oto Melara 127mm gun. The gun can fire at a rate of 40 rounds a minute for a range of 30,000m.

Two 30mm Goalkeeper CIWS on the Gwanggaeto the Great Class provide close point-defence against aircraft and incoming anti-ship missiles.

Torpedoes and sensors / radars
The Mark 46 torpedoes on the KDX-I destroyers serve as close-in anti-submarine weapons. Two 324mm Mk 32 triple torpedo tubes on either side of the forward end of the helicopter hangar can launch six Mk 46 Mod 5 ASW torpedoes. The Mk 46 can engage the submarines within the range of 11km.

The sensor suite integrates MW08 surface search radar and two STIR 180 fire control radars from Thales Nederland, Raytheon AN/SPS-49(V) 2D air search radar, and Daewoo SPS-95k Navigation radar. The ship is also equipped with ATLAS DSQS-21BZ hull mounted sonar.

Aircraft hangar support and countermeasures of the Gwanggaeto the Great Class (KDX-I) ships
The large hangar and helicopter deck at the stern can support up to two medium sized helicopters, such as Super Lynx.

"The Gwanggaeto the Great Class (KDX-I) destroyers were built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME)."
The destroyer is not equipped with a RAST (recovery, assist, secure and traverse system). The Super Lynx helicopter is equipped to communicate with the shipboard sensors to detect and destroy submarines located at long ranges.

The KDX-I Class is equipped with Argo Systems AR 700 and APECS II Electronic Support and Counter Measures (ES/ECM) system.

The fully automatic APECS II system detects and jams threat emitters using IFM (instantaneous frequency measurement) receivers and jammers. Other countermeasures equipment includes four CSEE DAGAIE MK.2 chaff launchers and SLQ-25 Nixie towed torpedo decoy system.

The KDX-I Class is powered by combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion system integrating two General Electric LM2500-30 gas turbines and two Sangyong 20V 956 TB 82 diesel engines.

The engines driving two controllable pitch propellers provide a maximum speed of 30kt and range of 4,000nmi at 18kt speed.

In 3-2016, President Sisi visited South Korea and, in view of the schedules of the delivery of the second batch of FFX-Daewoo DW 3000H Frigate, it will be clear to us that by sheer coincidence, there are five ships of this type for the South Korean Navy, all of which were manufactured by Daewoo, so it is Clear from this schedule that it was agreed to deliver one frigate quickly to Egypt followed by the delivery of others whether buying off the shelf or manufacturing locally in Egypt ( with transfer of technology)..

FFX - Daewoo DW 3000H Frigate is a great choice for the Egyptian Navy because:

1 - It is equipped with 16 cells to launch the home-made air defense missiles in South Korea assam.. A 16-cell K-VLS Korean Vertical Launch System adds locally-designed SAAM medium-range air defense missiles.

2. The long-range Haeseong-II cruise missiles, with a range of 500 km, It is made with local South Korean expertise and launched in 2014.

3. The frigate with all its systems, equipments and propulsion are made locally in South Korea. And Korea does not mind giving a manufacturing license to any country.

Very Important The Egyptian naval forces will celebrate October 3rd with the addition of 3 naval ships and a ceremony will be held to raise the Egyptian flag on the South Korean frigate "the model has not been announced officially", but the Incheon class is expected..

This is really incredible. This military shopping is unprecedented. All the new jets, the new ships, the new subs, the new attack helicopters including the Katrans for the LHD's, the military base, the radars, the SAMs and much more we've never seen a pace like this before, ever. Even the resupplying during the wars there was nothing like what has happened in the last 4 years and especially the last 2.

The frigates are an excellent choice to go with SK made ones. The Incheon class is tremendous and the Gwanggaeto destroyer might as well be a frigate with its behemoth size and caps. Would be nice to see them equipped with the Hyunmoo IIIC cruise missile. Sounds like SK doesn't have tight foreign sales restrictions, we like that. Should be fun to see what those 3 will be in early October. Wow.

.
KD-1 class are the first frigate class domestically produced by South Korea. These late-1990s ships are about the same displacement as the ex-USN Perry class ships operated by Egypt.

The big difference is that the Korean ships are much younger, by at least 20 years and are probably much more modernized than the Egyptian Perrys even with their minor modernizations that they went through in the early 2000's. Should be a great improvement.

The Pohang Class Corvette might also be included in the transfer, maybe several.

Egypt has to arm itself to the teeth now, because four major Arab armies have been destroyed on all its sides.. the once mighty Iraqi army, the Syrian army, the Libyan army and the Yemeni army.. just imagine in case of war what those armies would have counted for..So even with all these deals, Egypt is not at its peak yet.. a lot is still to be procured, many more Rafals, Gowinds, Fremms, Mig-35s, SU-35, S-400, Submarines and much more.. like long range cruise missiles, T-90MS, Iskandar tactical BM..and so on.. this is is in fact just an attempt to replace those lost military forces of allied Arab countries.. the Saudi deals also follow the same route..Since it will take at least a decade if not more to see those armies back in good shape.. So it is better to be careful and prudent..

Indeed. What is the status on the T90MS tanks? Did they sign anything on that ToT deal for 500 of them?

No. Egypt faces obscolescence of many of its main naval units i.e. ex-USN Knox class frigates (2) and ex-Chinese Jianghu class frigates (2) and Harpoon-equipped Romeo class submarines. Their ex-USN Perry class frigates (4) and ex-Spanish Descubierta corvettes (2) won't last forever either.

Syria, Libya and Yemen never have had any navy to speak of. Hence, this is irrelevant in the context Egyptian naval modernization. Besides Israeli naval capability, one [Egypt] needs to consider the increased naval strength of Morocco and Algeria, developments in the Saudi navy and, last but not least, the modernization of Turkish naval forces.

True. Depends on who was their adversary though. The results would still have been the same if they were fighting a superior military.

These are actually the ships which Pakistan should induct but our leadership seem to be waiting for some disaster to happen only than they would wake up

Egypt is doing just fine. Making all the right (and even beyond expectation) moves and procurement. It's navy is holding its weight quite well. Those (haters) who rag on it simply aren't familiar with all the goings on and always base the future on the past. Big mistake. Like any military, it certainly has its issues but it has come a long way just in the past 4 years alone. One can only imagine by 2020 what things will look like.

This chart doesn't even include Egypt's additional 2 Type 209 subs to make a total of 4 plus the older 4 Romeos and the total of 4 Gowinds and 4 FREMMs aren't included in this either. Neither are the newer South Korean frigates that are coming. Even with that, it has the 2nd largest naval fleet with 2 LHDs that should be fully equipped with Ka-52 Katran attack helicopters by next year and a defensive system.

I think Turkey is the only one where there is tension between the two governments and there might be some hidden concerns, but there's no issue with Israel's small navy since we're at peace with them and Morocco and Greece are allies whom we exercise together with. Algeria is of no significant concern whatsoever.

The 209s are replacing the Romeo ES5B's. Acquired as ES5As in mid-1980s and modernized in 1988 with a new fire control system, passive and active sonars, data links and a combination of updated UGM-84 Harpoon missiles, Mark 37 torpedoes and underwater operations equipment, these Romeo's are way old and way noisy (140 dB). You can bet some of gear from the 1988 modernization will find way into 209s (e.g. Sub-Harpoon).

Surface ships to replace: 2 Descubierta, 4 Jianghu-II, 2 Knox, 4 Perry. And a bunch of Soviet era missile boats (8 Osa 6 Komar/October, 6 Type 024 Hegu) and small ASW boats (8 Hainan, 4 Shanghai II). 3 Polochny class LSTs

Incoming: 2 Mistral, 4 Fremm, 4 Gowind, 3 KD-1, ?# Pohang class.

Yep, they will replace them. The reference was to the literature in that graph that didn't include the 2 additional 209 subs to the 2 that have already been delivered. There is talk of more submarines beyond the 4 Type 209's.

Those will happen in time. The FREMMs will eat into the Perrys as they are introduced and these SK frigates will also eat into those and replace/modernize the frigate fleet very nicely. They're even still considering the Russian Buyans corvettes. The pace of modernization is excellent.

Here's the current status with deliveries to date. (click for larger HR)
