  • The Capital Cairo is one of the largest-of-its-kind infrastructure development projects in the world, and will form a key part of the government’s economic reform programme.
  • The project will cost $45 bn, and will take between five to seven years to complete, expected that the population of greater Cairo, currently estimated at about 18 million, will double within 40 years.
  • With a land area of approximately 700 sqkm, The Capital Cairo marks one of the largest Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) in Egypt’s infrastructure development. The entire project is 12 times the area of Manhattan, seven times larger than Paris, and four times that of Washington DC and is expected to house 7 million people on completion.
  • The Egyptian parliament, government departments and ministries, as well as foreign embassies, would move to the new metropolis.
  • With over 10,000 km of boulevards, avenues and streets, the city will be pedestrian-friendly. It will have vibrant recreational spaces to bring people together. It will be buzzing with life day and night.

looks awesome :D

This is great news, congrat to both side. I wish Iran would do something similar. We need to make Tehran less crowded and it would be great to have a new administrative capital to lessen the burden on the current capital.

all i ask for is time we in Egypt has made little progress in the last 30 years but we are a nation of nearly 100 million and a huge workforce china has the know how and experience to do a project like this

You are a millennia old civilization so 30 years is only a drop in the ocean of time, for sure your nation will resurge back to rightful position after solving the temporary hiccups.

While CSCEC (China State Construction Engineering Corporation) is prepping for engineering works, let's close final rounds of financing arrangements between all parties (likely involving UAE, seems like Mohamed Al-Abbar is still in the talks) and build a great Cairo!

A similar project of this scale was completed at 2012 by the Chinese at outskirt of Angola capital of Luanda. Kilamba New City covers 8.8 square kilometers of land and comprises 750 apartment blocks, offering 25,000 homes for more than 200,000 inhabitants.

Here is the link of a good video coverage of it.(still don't know how to upload video at pdf)

Can some one upload the video inside the link? It is a good video, plus it shatters the lies that China built ghost city in Africa.

Well, you are much better off economically than us. Even if you have a 15 times as big population.

The past few years of political unrest have been really costly for Egypt. Our budget deficit ballooned into double digits, foreign exchange reserves shrank, inflation soared, many businesses struggled or were forced to close their doors and unemployment grew.

Now it is time to slowly bounce back and establish a new foundation for sustainable growth by incentivising productivity, investment and job creation.

We also need to focus on fostering and deepening our manufacturing and production base and on improving the quality of the Egyptian workforce. Improving the private sector and making it easier for foreign investors are crucial aspects as well.
It's an enormous task but with hard work and clever leadership we will reach our goals. The main goal for el-Sisi and his government should be to serve the Egyptian nation and improve it every day. Hopefully as many people as possible will leave poverty too. The potential in Egypt is big if a few issues will be corrected.

Not to forget defeat terrorism which we face in Sinai and put the tourism sector back to its former heights and even aim to beat previous numbers by improving the infrastructure further etc. I think that Egypt will remain a magnet for tourism and only grow on this front but we must not be as dependent on tourism as we have been in the past.

Well said bro! Egypt is looking forward to build infrastructure, expand manufacturing base. China is looking forward to export surplus capital and industrial capacity along OBOR. These complementary needs make Egypt and China natural partners.

I also believe China is a reliable partner for Egypt. Chinese arms industries are state-run and have no incentives in selling arms or creating tensions in the region, they take a back seat and service the big picture of China Inc which only benefits from long-term regional/global stability.

Like @mahatir said, it's not about Obama or any of their single president. The fundamental economic structure determines where interests lie. The exceptionally influential privately owned arms industries are just doing their business i.e. selling arms to politicians who pay with taxpayers' money, same at home, same abroad. It's always business.

An Egyptian-Chinese alliance was formed following the signing of seven memorandums of understanding (MOUs) to implement projects for the New Administrative Capital.

The MOUs were signed between Chairman of the Arab Contractors company Mohsen Salah, Chairman of Petrojet Mohamed Al-Sheimy, and Vice President of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).

The alliance will construct the new cabinet’s building along with 12 other ministerial buildings, starting with the Ministry of Housing. The alliance will also build a new convention centre, a fairground, and 15,000 residential units for low and middle income citizens.

“These projects mark the first phase of the new capital, which will be launched by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi,” an official statement issued by the ministry read. The first phase will be implemented on 10,500 feddans.

The MOUs also included the loan agreement for sewage projects in 1,077 villages in eight governments. The loan will be provided by Chinese governmental banks and is for an undisclosed amount.

During his upcoming visit to Cairo, Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the finalisation of the agreement outlined by the MOUs when the Egyptian companies sign the loan agreement with the Chinese side, Minster of Housing Mostafa Madbouly said Sunday.

At the inception of the new capital project, which was first launched in March 2014 during the Egypt Economic Development Conference (EEDC), the expected cost of construction totaled $45 bn and construction was supposed to take place during a five to seven-year implementation period. The capital will be located along the corridor between Cairo and the Red Sea, providing linkages to significant shipping routes.

Initially, Emirati Company Capital City Partners, a private real estate firm chaired by tycoon Mohamed Al-Abbar who was the principal investor in Dubai’s skyscraper Burj Khalifa which cost $1.5 bn to construct, was said to be the sole developer in the project.

Madbouly recently announced that the Egyptian New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) will infuse EGP 5bn in the new capital project.

The implementation of the new capital project was met with scepticism after conflicting reports from government officials. These reports included statements made by Assistant Minister of Housing Khaled Abbas who pointed out that negotiations with UAE investors over the New Cairo Capital project are facing significant difficulties. This led several news outlets to report that the agreement between Egypt and the UAE partner was terminated.

In June, Ministry of Housing spokesperson Wafaa Bakry told Daily News Egypt that private negotiations are still ongoing with the presidency. Madbouly also said at the time that those reports were untrue.

“Signing contracts usually takes a lot of time, so no need to worry about the project,” he had said.

The latest announcement made by Minister of Investment Ashraf Salman and Madbouly mentioned that Capital City Partners will not be the sole developer but rather will be one among many investors.

“The government is taking significant steps toward implementing the new administrative capital project via an investment zone system,” Salman said in September.

Egypt has massive potential but due to corrupt Governments it has failed to achieve that.

well Chinese are wise thinkers and Egyptians invented geometry..i hope they both will come up with a great projects...

We can only hope that this monumental project will turn out as planned.
Cairo, while a beautiful city with a lot of history, is overcrowded. It is after all the biggest city in the ME and one of the biggest cities in the world.
With the current population growth, Cairo's population is expected to double in the upcoming decades. Thus a new administrative and financial capital makes perfect sense especially as it will be located in the Greater Cairo area and less than 50 km away from the current capital. It will also be located close to the strategically important Suez Canal (Red Sea) and also not far from our Mediterranean coastline.

With such an overwhelming birth rate, Im affraid, no urban planning, or new construction ventures can render, anything favourable in the mid or long term ....

Because, with mumerous new genrations, adjacent areas, of the new city are going to get plagued with urban chaos, issues with parking space, water supppy, waste menagment .....

Egypt should be trying to decrease birth rate as much as possible, because its ruining the future of existing population. Demographic pressure is a pathway for future turmoils, "revolutions", unemployment ....

I ve watched some video about the Egypt, it was about many factories there were unable to run, because eletricity was needed for air conditioning, and that was last year. Whats going to happen in the future, only god knows

Excellent ! China, truly, has the ability to help Egypt realize their development goals. Anyways, as a progressive and pro-developmentalist , I welcome the Chinese leadership in this arena. I hope that Japan can cooperate with China in helping to develop the Middle East and the rest of the developing world. @Shotgunner51

Despite our animosity and ill-feeling at present, China and Japan need to reconcile with each other eventually for the sake of both nation's future. After all we have a great many of common culture trait and tradition. Maybe working together overseas is a good start of that process.
