It's been a worst-kept secret for decades, and now the Americans have finally decided to face the truth. Yes, India's education system, however outdated, is better than that in the US.

Students in USA challenge the teachers, whereas in India, they blindly accept whatever is taught to them. Pointing out this difference, US educationist Bruce Miller said that more than half a lakh students reach the USA for higher studies each year from India, whereas less than 5,000 American nationals reach India for the same.

Yet, the system of education and pedagogy followed in India by many institutions are much above the standards of what is there in America.

Bruce Miller was presenting a paper on 'American Approach to Technical Education' during Eklavya, a two-day international seminar on innovations in pedagogical approaches to secondary, technical, vocational education and training. The seminar was organised by Toc H Institute of Science and Technology at Arakkunnam, Kochi, in association with NITTTR Chennai, Indian Academy of Applied Psychology (IAAP) and Association of British Scholars (ABS).

The seminar was inaugurated by Ramachandran Thekkedath, Vice-Chancellor, Cochin University. Prof P J Joseph, president of TIST, in his presidential address said that teachers are not given proper practical training on how to teach effectively. Prof Michael Ford from England spoke about the different ways for the uplift of weak students. He reiterated on the standards on competencies on the basis of which teachers should evaluate them.

S Mohan, NITTTR, director, Chennai, was the chief guest for the valedictory function. He said teachers today need to inculcate values and ethics in the students apart from just focusing on the subjects. For that, they need to act as a role model. He also said that the present education needs focus on skills development and equipping the students to face the competitive world. He also stressed the need for training the technical teachers on teaching methodologies.

this imho is a really bad thing in India, it discourages interest in the subject and innovation...

Good joke.

But Indian students are better than American students, as we can't take government social welfare programs for granted (Not talking about SC/STs though). So we don't have have any alternative other than working hard. Same applies to Chinese and Pakistani students too.

I disagree with this MSN article. It is too Indian-centric.

US educational system encourages talent utilization and research.

.
how is mugging stuff and 'doing what you are told' better than having an open discussion.

Beats me.

Indian education system is still following the British era concept of mass production of clerks and juniors staff to run the empire with little or no scope for innovation.

Same is the situation with Pakistan.

This MSN article is misleading.

I don’t believe in this….we still have the worst educational system…we still have the system of mug-up to score…..we still teach our children who was the father of salim or who built the red fort and when did the battle of panipat took place…I mean, is it really required for primary school children when their brain is so fresh and can be used for innovations and creativity or to teach basics of more complex domains? Subjects like history, language, civics, drawing, craft must be made user friendly, don’t force them on children…let them decide after high secondary whether they want to pursue their career in those fields…but the fact is, people with brilliance in maths and physics, are forced to score in other subjects to get qualified for the academics of his interest..

Never say that we have the best system, 3 years old nursery going kid has more than 5 subjects…she has to undergo oral and written test every 3 months and parents have to visit the school to discuss the progress!!!!

Education in India has become a big business, especially when non church related institutions and so called charitable trusts owned by business empires like Birla ,Oberoi etc have jumped into this sector…fees in their primary school per student is more than 50% Indians gross family income!!! so can u call them charitable trust?

its so unfortunate that we don’t have any social security, social healthcare and social educational system for all..we do have all these systems in place, but even son of a beggar won’t go for it saying it is not up to the mark!
