Baku bids for World Expo 2025

Azerbaijan is keen to host another grand event -- World Expo 2025, the world's largest meeting place, bringing together countries, the private sector, the civil society and the general public.

The country has already submitted a letter of candidature to the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the intergovernmental organization in charge of overseeing and regulating World Expos, since 1931.

The letter, from President Ilham Aliyev was handed to the Secretary General of the BIE, Vicente G. Loscertales, by Elchin Amirbayov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to France and Head of Delegation to the BIE.

Azerbaijan’s candidature for Baku is based on the theme “Human Capital”, and the Expo would be open from May 10 to November 10, 2025, the BIE official website reported.

Loscertales, commenting on receipt of the letter of candidature, stated that this fourth candidature to organize World Expo 2025 reflects the fact that World Expos are transformational events. “We look forward to the project examination phase, when the BIE will find out more about the different propositions made by the candidates for World Expo 2025,” he added.

The project examination phase for World Expo 2025 will take place over the next year and a half. Each candidate will submit a bid dossier in September 2017, to be followed by a BIE Enquiry Mission in early 2018. Candidates will also present their Expo project during each General Assembly between now and the final vote.

The election of the host country by the 170 Member States of the BIE will take place at the 164th General Assembly in November 2018.

World Expos, known officially as International Registered Exhibitions, are organized every five years. They can last up to six months, and international participants can build their own pavilions on the Expo site. The themes of World Expos are designed to raise awareness of and find responses to universal challenges of our time.

The most recent World Expo was held in the city of Milan, Italy, in 2015, under the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

The next World Expo will take place in Dubai (UAE) between October 20, 2020 and April 10, 2021 under the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”.

I kind of want Azerbaijan to become the Switzerland of the region. Turkey should give any know-how it has for Azerbaijan to accomplish this goal. This will in turn benefit Turkey and the rest of the region as well. And even if it doesn't, canin sagolsun, at least Azerbaijan will have accomplished the goal of being an advanced economy.

Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran to coordinate railway freight traffic

Railway authorities of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Iran will create a working group to coordinate the transportation of cargo from the Persian Gulf region and India to Europe and in the opposite direction.

Azerbaijan Railways reported that the decision was made in Tbilisi at a meeting of Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Javid Gurbanov with CEO of Georgian Railways Mamuka Bakhtadze and Chairman of the Board and President of Iran Railways Saeed Mohammadzadeh.

The meeting focused on the organization of the transportation of cargo by land from the Persian Gulf region and India (passing through Azerbaijan and Georgia) to Europe and in the opposite direction, as well as the organization of cargo transportation via Azerbaijani and Iranian ports.

They noted that a large volume cargo from the Persian Gulf region and India to Europe and in the opposite direction is being currently transported by maritime transport, and this takes about 30-40 days. Transporting the cargo through Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran will reduce the transportation time too, they said.

The meeting participants also decided to organize the movement of container trains on the Poti/Batumi - Astara - Poti/Batumi route, and in the future – on the route Gazvin - Tehran/Bandar-Abbas - Gazvin.

A trilateral protocol was signed at the end of the meeting.

Azeri oil giant SOCAR to set up second petrochemical plant after Petkim

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is planning to increase its investments in Turkey. To that end, the company has recently announced that it will set up a second Petkim plant. The Azeri energy giant is planning to invest $18 billion in Turkey by 2020.

SOCAR Turkey Chairman Vagif Aliyev said that they will produce solutions to imports with their "chemical park" investment.

According to Hürriyet daily's report, SOCAR Turkey Chairman Aliyev said that they are working on a new investment for petrochemical products on Petkim Peninsula, as well as holding talks with the government that lean towards the issue, adding that the new plant could be a second Petkim.

Noting that the amount of investment is not clear but will be around $3 billion, Aliyev stated that there is no room for a new capacity increase at Petkim. "The new investment should be near Petkim. We are currently engaging in talks with the government to evaluate this within the scope of strategic investment. This will give us a great advantage," he added.

Aliyev also said that SOCAR is planning to take part in the fuel distribution sector. "We were interested in purchasing Petrol Ofisi in order to take part in the distribution sector. However, we withdrew due to the price. We can either set up a company or make another purchase," Aliyev said.

"We regard Turkey as our own home," SOCAR Turkey CEO Zaur Gahramanov also said, stressing that they will invest $18 billion in Turkey by 2020, and that $11 billion has been invested so far. "The Star Refinery will be completed in 2018. In addition, the wind energy plant that we established in Petkim will meet 30 percent of Aliağa's energy," he continued. "There are 14 power plants in operation. Investment is high but ecological. This is SOCAR's first wind power plant anywhere in the world."

Nice development.

Does SOCAR invest in renewables (with the exception of what they what next to Petkim)?

Does SOCAR invest in renewables (with the exception of what they what next to Petkim)?

SOCAR is only investing in renewable energy for Petkim's needs, otherwise there is no need for them to invest in renewables, AzerEnerji is responsible for that and has multiple large projects, such as the first offshore wind farm in the region.

Just hoping your government is preparing for the future.

Just hoping your government is preparing for the future.

Azerbaijan already has solar production set up, and notably, won the tender for construction of the solar farm in Germany, next step is expansion of AZGUNTEX ( solar panel manufacture plant ) and start production of wind turbines. Its not just about thinking of the future, development of alternative energy allows for greater export of fossil fuels, and conversion to other raw materials required for production. Azerbaijan also has a nuclear power plant project, but I believe Azerbaijan is waiting for completion of Shah Deniz 2, since its the main economic priority, nuclear power plant is a pretty expensive project for a small country.

Afaik, caspian sea is perfect for wind tirbunes, always windy and there is no suck thing as "mountain" to block winds in the middle of the sea.
