BARRACKPORE (WB): Based on threat perception, the country's eastern region would get its first Sukhoi squadron in October, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief P K Barbora said on Tuesday.
"Two Sukhoi squadrons would be based at Tezpur from October. This is for the first time that an Air Force Station in the eastern region will get such squadrons. Facilities at Tezpur are being upgraded accordingly," Barbora told newsmen at the Air Force Station here.
IAF sources said the two squadrons would comprise a total of approximately 36 Sukhoi-30 aircraft.
"Based on threat perception, we are upgrading our assets," he said, adding that the Air Force base at Jorhat, mainly used for transport purposes, was also being upgraded.
Upgradation work at Air Force Station Kalaikunda in West Bengal, scene of several joint air exercises including 'Cope India' with the US Air Force, was already on to create facilities on par with international standards.
Pointing out that the Air Force was in the process of procuring 126 fighter aircraft in the next five to six years, he said that to maintain its combat potential, the IAF would buy 40 Su-30 MKI aircraft. Besides, it was also upgrading its fleet of MiG-29s and Mirage-2000s.
In reply to a question, Barbora said that he did not see any threat from China which is now claiming Arunachal as its territory. "There are some minor problems over the actual Line of Control. But I do not think that India and China would get into a war on this."
