Earthquake in Italy, 35 dead.

. .
Depth of the epicentre matters a lot.
The consitency of the ground matters more, for exsample, the shockwaves travely a lot better on unstanble ground like sand or marsh while a rocky ground is usually blocking the waves much better.

Also the material of the buildings matter too, a brick house is the worst choice in a earthquake zone, wood, steel and even reinforced concrete should be used.

.
Didn't know 6.2 can cause such devastation too.

Depth, energy from a quake spreads over distance so if a quake is 500k away even if thats straight down the power at any point on the surface is a lot less.

The 7.2 in Christchurch caused a wobble and a few minor injuries, the 6.4 almost at the surface flattened the city and killed 200.
My thought and prayers for all affected.

Glad to hear your OK Markus

The earthquake was swallow at a depth of around 4km so even though the EQ was relatively of small magnitude, its effect was devastating.
shallow earthquake will be more devastating than deep ones as most of the vibrations will be passed to the surface.

RIP to the dead.

The size of an earthquake on richter scale doesnt neccessarily determine the scale of destruction, building material, ground consistency and types of seismic waves are primarily responsible for the destruction.
A 6.0 earthquake can cause more destruction than a 7 or 8 under certain circumstances.
