KARACHI: A light earthquake of magnitude 4.8 jolted northwest Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan on Friday but there were no immediate reports of casualties, an official said.

The quake struck at 4:32 pm (1132 GMT) with its epicentre in the Hindu Kush mountain range, chief meteorologist Mohammad Riaz told AFP.

Tremors were felt in several cities in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its capital, Peshawar, he said.

The small quake hit a few hours after a devastating 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit Japan on Friday and triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific ocean.

Pakistan was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005 that killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless, mainly in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

I wonder what is happening to the earth's plates and core for so many widespread quakes, worldwide?

One of our adult children is this week doing volunteer earth quake relief work for and with her US church in Haiti following their very bad earth quake there earlier this year.

Northern Pakistan; Japan; Haiti, pretty far apart locations for earth quakes.

Meanwhile millions of dollars of damage to US harbors, boats and such in coastal California and Oregon from the Japanese quake induced Sunami.
And increased radiation from Japanese atomic plant escaped radioactive clouds now in Southern California.

Whoever said it doesn't matter if things happen elsewhere but not at home on either end of these events? We live in a reality interconnected world where old prejudices and biases and making up stuff vs. dealing with objective truths cannot be avoided.

It also hit many parts of North India.

Luckily it seems there are no casualties.

It originated in Afghanistan? Everything OK there?
