KARACHI: Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Majeed Abbasi was killed Tuesday when unknown assailants opened fire on a police mobile in Karachi's Shah Latif Town area.

The DSP was on his way to duty when he was targeted in Shah Latif Town's Zafar Town area. The slain police official was posted as SP of Site town.

He was critically injured and was being shifted to Jinnah Hospital but succumbed to his wounds on the way, Dr Seemin Jamali, head of emergency at JPMC, told Dawn.

Station House Officer (SHO) Shah Latif Town also said DSP Majeed Abbasi was killed when four unidentified assailants targeted his police mobile near Masjid Ahl Hadees.

Police, Rangers and officers in the Sindh capital have been frequently targeted in Karachi in the fight against militancy, target killings and sectarian violence. Grenades have been lobbed at police stations and vehicles.

Earlier last month, deputy superintendent of police Abdul Fatah Sangri along with his security guard and driver was shot dead in a gun attack.

Karachi has been a cauldron of ethnic and political tension for decades, where political parties have militant wings, gangs make money through drug-trafficking, land grabbing and other forms of crime, and sectarian violence.

Targeted operations led by Rangers’ forces with the support of police are ongoing in the city under a directive issued by the federal government against criminals already identified by federal, military and civilian agencies.

PM condemns DSP murder
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the murder of DSP Majeedi Abbasi in Karachi.

Seeking a report into the incident, he expressed concern over the number of police officials targeted in Karachi in the last few weeks, and directed the authorities to take tangible steps to improve the law and order situation in the metropolitan city, and apprehend criminals at the earliest.

I don't understand why do they always move in bull's eye position. All are sitting in same van no back up! Security guard is useless unless he protects from a distance, not in the same line of fire.

Well...
you know then people will start whining about protocals.
Drag the VIPs out in the road and beat them and what not....

Should Indians celebrate this like how Pakistanis do when our security forces are killed? No, we are better than them.

RIP brave soul.

Sad incident. ..RIP to brave DSP.

A stupid cannot be called a brave. This isn't first incident, all are killed in the same fashion. Still they can't device a better strategy.

Long protocols are British legacy i suppose. For safety purpose one guard is enough. Always move in twosome minimum but not in the same vehicle.

We send our deepest condolences to the (DSP) Majeed Abbasi’s family and friends. At the same time we take our hat off to all the brave security officials who are working hard to counter terrorism. These acts of terror aim to spread fear and panic among the general public. The terrorists are attempting to stamp their authority by targeting security officials. Unfortunately, this is not the first time a senior police officer was killed in an act of terror. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry during his visit to Pakistan earlier this year also expressed appreciation for the sacrifices of Pakistan’s military personnel and civilians in the fight against terrorism and extremism and commended Pakistan’s resolve and the steps being taken to tackle terrorism in a comprehensive and robust manner.

It goes without saying that the need of the hour is to remain united against the enemies of peace, and we fully support the government of Pakistan in its mission to restore peace in the country.
