You are right about first generation of drivers. There is also the problem of civic sense and in some cases, a sense of superiority derived from the size and price of the vehicle driven.
Some fcukers in larger vehicles will act like they own the road while cyclists are at the bottom of the pecking order. Then there is the probe of people just running red lights, rich kids in million dollar vehicles acting like rich little shits and officials with their sense of self entitlement. In time this will change but for now its still quite wild.
Ah, yes, this is something that is socially accurate. The issue of class-derived arrogance. This is very true in Japan and am sure will remain an issue in China, my friend. Younger folks in Japan who can afford a Lexus GX570 (usually daddy is a rich businessman , a rich doctor, or a politician) usually will drive such humongous beasts of burden with little road etiquette. And not only that, you will see these guys tail-gaiting people who drive smaller (or lower priced?) automobiles.
