NEW DELHI: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which is facing criticism over the undue delay in completing works, is presently working on 294 projects with an outlay of around `2 crore each.Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar informed the Rajya Sabha that technological complexities, ab-initio development of state-of-the-art technology, non-availability of infrastructure/test facilities in the country, non-availability of critical components/ equipment/materials in the country and denial of technologies by the technologically advanced countries, failure of some of the components during trials/testing and increase in the scope of work during developmental phase are some of the reasons for the delay in the DRDO projects.
Parrikar said that several steps had been taken for the timely completion of the ongoing projects like consortium approach for design, development and fabrication of critical components and three-tier project monitoring approach for major projects. The Project Monitoring Review Committee (PMRC) and Project Appraisal and Review Committee (PARC) meetings are being held regularly to monitor the progress of ongoing projects, the minister said.
Though the DRDO has claimed to have completed 45 projects in the last three years, the government has constituted an independent review committee headed by Dr P Rama Rao to improve the functioning of the premier research agency.
The Committee has also recommended some points to expedite the on-going projects.
