The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) plans to set up advanced technology centres in prominent academic institutes including IITs, parliament was told Friday.

There will be one centre in IIT-Bombay for research in advanced propulsion technologies and next generation aero engine technologies, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley told the Lok Sabha.

Another centre at Jadavpur University in Kolkata will work on "Unmanned Autonomous Soldier-Assist Technologies", he said.

DRDO was organising technical workshops with research faculty and scientists and negotiating with institutes for establishing these Advanced Technology Centres, he said.

"Research focus areas, existing capabilities and need for additional research facilities are assessed for establishing these centres," Jaitley added.

The DRDO established the Research and Innovation Centre at IIT-Chennai in 2012.

This is a very significant attempt. It will increase the research output from our premier universities. If students are exposed to high quality research during University, they're likely to pursue a career in this field after graduating.
Good news, this will surely boost R&D in the country

Moreover many students of premier universities who generally prefer high paying jobs in foreign MNCs might be motivated to rather take up jobs in DRDO which-although comparatively low paying-are challenging and exciting and will count as doing service to the nation.

It is a pity that we keep comparing against each other. It is like a shanty owner comparing against homeless to feel good. But he would never dare to compare against a posh area. We should compare with best in fields. Both countries have not really done anything. Make a product that get attention of world.

BTW, shanty owner, homeless is just an analogy.

True... from pre school to university, students are taught to memorize and learn by hard... but too few are taught how to use their brains, think analytically and think independently

Are they also going to pay or reward if some body comes up with something fruitful?

..deciding and implementing are two different things.....
Wish them Good Luck....

As long as IIT pass outs go after IIMs we can't find enough students to go in R&D. It needs to be more lucrative so that we don't loose brightest of our students to other fields.
