Quick reaction surface-to-air and anti-radiation missiles on the radar
Riding on the success of several missile launches from the long range surface-to-surface Agni-V to the air-to-air Astra during 2012, the Defence Research and Development Organisation is gearing up to develop futuristic strategic systems.

These include multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRVs), manoeuvrable re-entry vehicles (MARVs), subsonic cruise missiles, quick reaction surface-to-air missiles and anti-radiation missiles.

Talking to The Hindu here, DRDO’s Chief Controller (Missiles and Strategic Systems), Avinash Chander, said the wide range of missiles tested this year, showed India had matured in the development and production of missile technologies and gained a level of total stability.

Referring to the successful flight trial of Astra recently, he said it was a “major breakthrough” as large changes were made in the aerodynamics and propulsion configurations.

The flight trials by mounting Astra on fighter aircraft were expected to be conducted in 2013. In the next few months, DRDO scientists plan to test-fire Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile, undertake an interceptor missile test in exo-atmosphere for the Ballistic Missile Defence (DMD) system and conduct another trial of the 5,000 km range Agni-V. Also the underwater missile (K-15) would be tested again from a pontoon before its integration with Arihant, India's nuclear-powered submarine.

He said the hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle was expected to be ready by next year-end.

The production of LRSAM being developed in collaboration with Israel would start after the completion of full configuration trials next year. DRDO was working to develop very quick reaction state-of-art surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) of plus 300 km range.

Mr. Avinash said problems were faced with regard to seeker in the anti-tank Nag missile and initiatives were taken to overcome it.

After achieving major strides in 2012, he said DRDO was looking for possessing world class competitive systems capabilities and would be setting up its own foundries to meet the requirements.

There should be a thread called DRDO PR and put all this "we will do this and we will do that by Saraswat and his gang over there." @KRAIT any chance of getting the mods to do this? else new threads keep coming up.

I don't know. But one can start a thread on Indian future defense programs. Create it and ask any MOD to make it sticky.

Yawn.. pehle haath me liya huwa kaam poora karo aur baad mein bolo hum futurustic (sic) banana banayenge, karenge, dikhayenge etc etc..

@Dandpatta . dude this is an ongoing cycle ,one does not stop for the other ! if we had done ongoing effort with HAL MARUT , we already would have one heck of a 5th gen fighter by now !

They are right in proclaming that DRDO will build futuristic vehicles......but not mentioned when will they complete and induct it....aadha adhura kaam karke age badhane ka naam hai DRDO....all hail the money eater DRDO with lot of vision but no precision...PJ...

Futuristic :what: i thought it wiil be some laser tech or something new wht is futuristic in all this missiles most of them are in devlopment ....

@ironman, no issues with what you have said, but given the numerous timeline stretches (major ones) that they have had on many projects, I would expect them to at least work in secrecy and show the final work as and when it is DONE. Stating that they will / can / should / would / could etc is good for morale boosting but the morale goes bust every time a DRDO draws itself the limelight of delays

The Defence Technology Commission envisaged by the Union government to provide a thrust to indigenous research and development of contemporary and futuristic defence systems is expected to be set up soon, V. K. Saraswat, Director-General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference after launching the DRDO-IIT-M Research and Innovation Centre at the IIT Madras Research Park, Taramani, Mr. Saraswat said the constitution, empowerment and functions of the Commission had reached a stage of finality and “we’re awaiting approval of the government.”

Apart from increasing self-reliance in development of defence systems, the Commission also envisages setting up a commercial arm for the promotion of DRDO products, some of which have civilian applications ranging from Dengue test kits to mosquito repellants. The DRDO has already drafted in FICCI to actively market a broad portfolio of DRDO products, Mr. Saraswat said.

The DRDO chief also offered an overview of several DRDO products that were in final stages of development or under field testing and expected to give a cutting edge to the weaponry of Army, Air Force and Navy by 2013-14.

The DRDO pipeline includes sub-sonic cruise missiles that can be launched across multiple platforms - ground, air and ship - a range of tactical missiles and next generation Future Main Battle Tanks that are more agile, have higher firepower and loaded with stealth factors.

“We have also started a project on National Mission on Development of a Power Plant and Transmission System on the tank,” he said.

According to the DRDO chief, the country had developed robust ballistic missile defence systems and achieved almost 90 per cent indigenisation in product content.

Phase I of the programme involved developing missiles that could engage targets up to a range of 2,000 km and Phase II focused on systems that could achieve precision strikes beyond that range, he said.

On the aeronautical front, indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and its Naval variant were in advanced stage of development while Rustom, the Medium Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV), was likely to take to the skies by 2014-15, Mr. Saraswat said.

On the Research and Innovation Centre set up in collaboration with IIT-Madras, Mr. Saraswat said it would focus on “high-end and directed research” involving DRDO projects. Among the nearly a dozen DRDO projects that have been identified as common ground of interest for DRDO scientists, IIT faculty and research students involve materials, cyber security, image processing and aerospace applications.

IIT-Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said the IIT, which had a long history of collaboration with the DRDO, including the recently-trialled submarine-launched K-15 missile, envisaged the joint innovation centre as a tripartite partnership that would also involve regional industry. The facility was set up at an estimated cost of Rs. 47 crore.

anti-radiation missiles futuristic? I thought that they had been around awhile.
