Quick reaction surface-to-air and anti-radiation missiles on the radar
Riding on the success of several missile launches from the long range surface-to-surface Agni-V to the air-to-air Astra during 2012, the Defence Research and Development Organisation is gearing up to develop futuristic strategic systems.
These include multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRVs), manoeuvrable re-entry vehicles (MARVs), subsonic cruise missiles, quick reaction surface-to-air missiles and anti-radiation missiles.
Talking to The Hindu here, DRDOs Chief Controller (Missiles and Strategic Systems), Avinash Chander, said the wide range of missiles tested this year, showed India had matured in the development and production of missile technologies and gained a level of total stability.
Referring to the successful flight trial of Astra recently, he said it was a major breakthrough as large changes were made in the aerodynamics and propulsion configurations.
The flight trials by mounting Astra on fighter aircraft were expected to be conducted in 2013. In the next few months, DRDO scientists plan to test-fire Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile, undertake an interceptor missile test in exo-atmosphere for the Ballistic Missile Defence (DMD) system and conduct another trial of the 5,000 km range Agni-V. Also the underwater missile (K-15) would be tested again from a pontoon before its integration with Arihant, India's nuclear-powered submarine.
He said the hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle was expected to be ready by next year-end.
The production of LRSAM being developed in collaboration with Israel would start after the completion of full configuration trials next year. DRDO was working to develop very quick reaction state-of-art surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) of plus 300 km range.
Mr. Avinash said problems were faced with regard to seeker in the anti-tank Nag missile and initiatives were taken to overcome it.
After achieving major strides in 2012, he said DRDO was looking for possessing world class competitive systems capabilities and would be setting up its own foundries to meet the requirements.
