DRDO official sees good export potential for Tejas

Unit cost:
F-16 is $17 million.
Tejas is $31 million.

How much was India planning to sell Tejas for export ?

Those are the numbers from 1998, by now it will be around $30M if we add inflation. F-16 B52 goes for $55M a piece and the ones they offered to India cost around $65M.

PS:Morocco bought 24 F-16 B52 planes for $2.4B which translates to $100M a plane.

Not a bad idea. Building a fighter aircraft is not easy but finding a market for the fighter that is built for your needs is harder.

Um, those figures for the F-16 are for the A/B versions from the 90s...

Why don't you check how much the unit price for the most recent F-16s are, like the ones that Pakistan acquired recently.

Okay, I looked it up. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., of Fort Worth, Texas, is being awarded a modified firm fixed price contract for $27,000,000 for the Peace Drive I (Pakistan) Program for foreign military sales F-16 Block 52M.

So how much is India going to sell Tejas for export??

oiii.. You are back.. good to see you buddy.

Dont see it happening, can imagine most nations going for J-10 by the time Teja can be exported.

.
Ok cant we see Gripen's example here ?? its using an american engine and still being exported...the customer/supplier might have a clash, but then it is not necessary..moreover by the time we export the aicraft, we'll have our own engine.

F-16

Pakistan had originally planned a total purchase valued at $5.1 billion, almost all of it in national funds. The 2005 Kashmir earthquake and subsequent financial constraints caused Pakistan to reduce the number of new planes it wanted to purchase from 36 to 18, which lowered the overall value of the deal to approximately $3.1 billion. The 18 new planes are valued at $1.4 billion, with the remainder of the $3.1 billion dedicated to associated munitions (valued at approximately $641 million) and 46 Mid-Life Update (MLU) kits for Pakistan's existing F-16 fleet (estimated to cost $891 million). Additionally, the United States has provided Pakistan with 14 F-16s designated as Excess Defense Articles (EDA).

Seems Pakistan paid around $75M a piece for F-16 Block 52 which is much more than the present price of LCA. We will come to know the export price when we got the first order.

You can't look at the total program cost and divide by number of planes. Total program cost include spares, training and support. Spares is a huge cost. I'm also pretty sure that $1.4 Billion figure is military aid to Pakistan. The US regularly transfers F-16 to allies for free. When the F-35 is deployed, the US will have a 1,000 F-16 to give away. For a fair comparison, you have to look at unit cost to unit cost.

That's not the total program cost, that's the cost of the planes themselves, as is clearly mentioned. There was an additional $3.1 billion for the remainder of the program.

Most modern fighters are quite expensive, with unit prices that are typically between $60 million and $100 million. In this price range, the Tejas is quite competitive.

In one of my previous post, i mentioned the price of F-16 B52 at $55M a piece(4 years back), not to mention the irrational agreements to be signed when purchasing US armaments.

They count spare parts, support and training in the $1.4 Billion. Where else would it go?? It's not munitions. From the US Air Force website, the F-16 C/D was $18.8 million in 1998 dollars. That is not $75 million in 2008. US inflation is 2-3% per annum. $75 million per plane makes no sense.

Also, the real cost to Pakistan is probably Zero. This is most likely US military aid to Pakistan (and the numbers are inflated to make US look more generous). In any business it is very hard to compete with free.
