What's new

DRDO 155mm/52cal Artillery Program (ATAGS)

The wheeled MGS requirement isn't cancelled, the requirement for MGS outweighs the tracked SPGs (up to 800 units) and L&T is in pole positon with its CEASAR/AL chassis offer.

Not referring to Mounted gun systems, they will be based upon trucks.

The wheeled ones was about 180 pieces of SPHs upon a wheeled APC chassis ,something like https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/G6_howitzer

I don't know why the Army even chose the K9 Vajra when we could've instead revived the Bhim project, we could've replace the original 23 litre chamber ordinance on the the Bhim with the one from ATAGS. Hell the Vajra-T doesn't even have the same automation as the Bhim which had an autoloader for 20 shells and charges.

The 25 litre chamber variant G6-52L gives 50-52Km with ERFB-BB shells, for comparison the 23 litre G6-52 gives 42km wth ERFB-BB while the 23 litre FH-77B02 L39 gives 30km maximum range. A similar range increase can be expected vis a vis 23 litre chamber 155 L52 howitzers provided that the charges used are powerful.

I hope the Army has the hindsight to standardise on the 25 litre chamber 155 L52 towed, mounted, wheeled and tracked self propelled howitzers because the charges for the 25 litre variants aren't backwards compatible and safe when using with a howitzer of 23 litre chamber capacity
