Newly appointed caretaker finance czar Dr Shamshad Akhtar has expressed her dedication to fulfil all international obligations, including those with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a statement from the Finance Division stated on Thursday.

Dr Akhtar took oath as Caretaker Finance Minister of Pakistan at the President House on Thursday, along with 24 others in the caretaker prime minister’s cabinet.

She brings with her years of experience from a distinguished career in both national and international roles. Dr Akhtar has a background in finance, economics, and development.

Back in 2006, she took over as Governor State Bank of Pakistan for a three-year term, becoming the first woman to head the country’s central bank since its inception in 1948.

“Upon assuming her new role, Dr Shamshad Akhtar expressed her dedication to ensuring fiscal discipline, promoting investment, and bolstering efforts to address income inequality. She also emphasised that all the international obligations, including those with the IMF, will be fulfilled,” the statement said.

The appointment comes at a time when Pakistan remains enrolled in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. Under a $3-billion nine-month Stand-By Arrangement (SBA), the country received the first tranche of around $1.2 billion last month.

However, despite clinching a last-minute deal, which helped the nation avert a potential default, pressure remains as the nation’s financing requirements remain elevated.

At such a time, the caretaker setup, which is normally responsible for conducting free and fair elections, has the added burden of navigating reforms promised to the IMF.

On her arrival at the Finance Ministry, she was welcomed by Secretary Finance and senior officials of the ministry.

Later, Secretary Finance and his team gave a detailed briefing on the economic situation and trends of major financial economic indicators of the country.

Earlier this week, Dr Akhtar was conferred the Nishan-i-Imtiaz by President Dr Arif Alvi on the occasion of Independence Day.

So many doctors in the cabinet. Looks like a good start.

They could not find an economist? She is a Banker. Any serious government would keep a banker away from making Fiscal/Monetary policies.

And what about the obligations for the people, it must be the first priority of the government.
A democratically elected government has obligations to the people. This caretaker government only has to honor agreement signed with foreign entities.

This team will fulfill all IMF demand ..... by the way.... one of our massi/cleaning lady was badly crying she got electric bill of over 27,000 rupees ....

These jokers won't be able to fix the economy, Establishment has caused so much damage it's beyond repair, why should any invester risk thier capital in an highly unstable environment.

They could not find an economist?
She graduated from the University of Punjab with a B. A. Economics degree in 1974. Dr. Shamshad Akhtar has an M.Sc. in Economics from the Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, an M.A. in Development Economics from the University of Sussex in 1977 and a Ph.D. in Economics from the U.K.’s Paisley College of Technology in 1980. She is a post-doctoral fellowship Fulbright Scholar and was a visiting fellow at the Department of Economics, Harvard University in 1987.

Her predecessor had not even studied economics as a cursory subject. He was an accountant. He was illiterate (and innumerate) in economics. This lady can chew him and spit him out any day of the week and twice on a Sunday.

More like their GHQ sepoy handlers signed an agreement with their colonial masters, caretakers are small time errand boys of the sepoys.

As long as you have Mir Bajwas vetoeing important fiscal decisions, e.g. taxing real estate and retailers, no amount of academic credentials will make an iota of difference.

We have the veneer of a caretaker government for the 90 days. After that, their decisions are “their” decisions.

Fake degrees galore. Brain of a peanut. If these people were intelligent would the follow people like nawaz shareef and shahbaaz shreef or diesel or bandri?

New tax policies are unlikely to be in the purview of caretaker government. If 76 years of regular governments couldn't do it, it is too much to expect a temporary government to take such momentous decisions.
