Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday appointed Dr Moeed Yusuf as the special assistant to the prime minister on national security division and strategic policy planning, a notification issued by the Cabinet Division said.

He will hold the status of minister of state, according to the notification.

Yusuf was formerly the associate vice president of the Asia centre at the US Institute of Peace in Washington DC.

In September, he was appointed as the chairperson of the Strategic Policy Planning Cell (SPPC), which functions under the Pakistani government's National Security Division.

The author of Brokering Peace in Nuclear Environments: US Crisis Management in South Asia, Yusuf has taught at Boston University, George Washington University, and Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. He is also a columnist for daily Dawn.

Yusuf holds a Masters in international relations and a PhD in political science from Boston University.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Yusuf before joining the USIP was a fellow at the Frederick S. Pardee Centre at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, and concurrently a research fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Centre at Harvard Kennedy School.

He has also worked at the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think tank.

In 2007, Yusuf co-founded Strategic and Economic Policy Research, a private sector consultancy firm in Pakistan.

He has also consulted for the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, and the Stockholm Policy Research Institute, among others.

Between 2004 and 2007, Yusuf was a full-time consultant with the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in Islamabad, according to his profile.

A very interesting development, makes Moeed our de facto NSA.

Good to see able people joining his ranks... the more of such people the better

Pakistan needs to be lead by lions not donkeys

Mansoor Ahmed of Harvard’s Belfer Center is a much better choice than this Dawn columnist. A poor decision by PTI and one doesn’t need to be a “Patwari” to say so.

clearly you dont know him

Excellent decision.

Sure matric passed people who go and become generals. You want them to lead the country ? They have destroyed several departments already not because of ill-intentions but pure ignorance and incompetence. Be sensible.

as opposed to BA failed loony toons like Nawaz... you do know how Maryum "got" into medical college?

.
he will only focus on ending support to kashmiri freedom struggle and promoting liberalism in Pakistan and keep terrorism top agenda of any dialogue with india instead of kashmir, similarly there are chances he promote ptm point of view in talks with u.s without raising concern of indian influence in afghanistan.Very risky and dangerous decisions by govt for short term gains

An american mouthpiece is here as a special advisor to PM on national security. Expect more from this installed government in coming days.

And what exactly is your logic behind calling him an "American Mouthpiece"?

Have you ever heard the guy’s view and know about his active efforts to promote Pakistan’s point of view in Washington?

Do you expect him and others to even try to use their brain?

Anyone who have any doubts on Imran Khan being the pawn of axis of evil?

And what exactly is your logic behind that statement? Do you know this guy? Do you know what he does or what views he holds or just making things out of your gas is a normal thing?

Good move. Mr Yousuf is well connected with the member of US congress and can be instrumental in promoting Pakistan's interest in an environment where Indians aggressively lobby against Pakistan.

Nah!!! He's a yahoodi agent agent.

Do you think our intel guys would even consider appointing him if that were the case. Also Sometimes you need to be an insider to get something out.
Unfortunately people like Asif Zardari, Altaf Hussain and Nawaz Sharief were also establishment appointed guy and if you look it deeply then people like Hussain Haqqani also got similar approvals.

So I would like to know his credentials rather than giving him clean chit on the basis of approval from intelligence agencies. Our intelligence agencies are better than other instittues but they have their own share of f**k ups in present deteriorated situation of Pakistan

. . .
Ofno

Ignorance is a quite crude word dear which you have used twice. I have every right to criticize every decision of government and i have also found his several interviews as pro US maligning Pakistan and Pak Army. And i am sorry if he is your close relative or friend and you found my words harsh. But its my point of view and we both have to respect each other's views. Have a good day.

I have found several of interviews against Pak Army and denouncing the sacrifices of our soldiers in WoT and that too on some serious forums.

From ZAB to IK, every puppet was installed. I hate Nawaz for his corruption and IK for abusing our jawans when they were busy in critical operations against TTP. Those interviews of IK were really hurting for me as i was fighting this war with my pen.
If you are determined to hate him, no power on earth can make you like him.
You can rest assured that these kinds of decisions in Pakistan related to forign policy are always first confirmed by our army and establishment. Here civilians cannot alone take decisions.
Besides everyone criticise war on terror.
We as a country have destroyed our own essence in that war. Anyone not criticising it would be a fool and we did it for what? Few dollars. What good have they done us ..

I see the fighting in the above comments for and against Dr. Moeed.

You can only marvel how forgetful we as a nation are. Pakistani NSA is no where near an Indian NSA in terms of decision/policy making power and influence on PM.

Our foreign policy and PM is effectively controlled by one single institution. No marks for guessing which.

Chill out.

His appointment has other intents and purposes.

I only see people in favor of Dr. Moeed appointment in fighting mode, with personal remarks, giving nothing else.

Other's are raising doubts on appointment and giving their reasons. No personal attacks are involved there.

I have heard him he sounds like one of the few sane voices when it comes to India Pakistan .he is more tilted towards economic strength that military strength for Pakistan .

As i said,... he was launched in Pakistan from quite some time, and to hand over policy matters of national defense to a single person, in dictatorial fashion, makes the case suspicions from the word go.
