I may consider contesting next elections from Lahore: Dr AQ Khan

LAHORE: After observing the enthusiasm and passion of the youth of Lahore, father of the ‘Islamic bomb’ Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan said on Wednesday that he may consider contesting next elections from the city.

“I have great affection for this city,” said Khan while addressing a gathering at the Punjab University (PU) on Wednesday. He, however, did not specify whether he would contest for the provincial assembly or the national one.

Khan was invited by the PU administration to address students, faculty members and employees of the university.

Continuing with his praise for the youth, and a veiled hint towards two Lahore based political parties who are increasingly hedging their bets for the next election on Pakistan’s single largest population component, Khan said that “if one has sincere and dedicated team members like you, one can defeat anybody.”

The PU’s Faisal Auditorium, where Khan spoke, was packed with students, teachers and guests. The security arrangements were done by a special squad which is responsible for Khan’s security and nobody without a permission letter was allowed to access to the venue.

Appreciating the pace of development in Punjab, Khan said that “Shahbaz Sharif is an energetic politician and works hard. I would advise Nawaz Sharif to let Shahbaz handle all the political matters alone.”

Recollecting his correspondence with Zulfikhar Ali Bhutto regarding Pakistan’s nuclear program after India had conducted its first nuclear test in ’74, Khan recalled telling then Prime Minister Bhutto in a letter that Pakistan would not survive for another 10 years if necessary counter actions are not taken. “I was an unknown scientist, however Bhutto sahab trusted me and paid attention to my letter. He called me and I proposed some ideas to him,” Khan recalled.

Khan further said he was not in Pakistan during this time and when he came back in 1975, he realised that the nuclear program had made no progress at all. “I informed Bhutto sahab about this, who took notice and then asked me to live in Pakistan to oversee the work,” Khan said.

Pakistanis are brought up to believe AQK produced nuclear bomb overnight like your amma stitches cloths with sewing machine one night before EID. Shahbaz Dakho should not be confused for a servant of Pakistan but in reality is nothing but a thief $cum bag who is looting this nation along with his friends in government.

keep confusing common men by over patronizing some one first and when he supports some one who is corrupt from head to toe ..

this way more voters will get confuse and IK will get less share of votes in Punjab

LOL isn't AQ-Khan a member of PTI?
I'm sure Imran Khan won't be too pleased with this.

This is a great advice. the duffer Nawaz should lead rest of his life in Jeddah and leave party matters to Shehbaz... he may not be competent enough but atleast he has a desire to be remembered as khadme-alla, which drives him positively...

Yes, he abandoned a highly lucrative job to work for the government in building the bomb and spent 20 years on it. He was the one who suggested Uranium instead of Plutonium

Leave it, no need to argue with 0.01% minority, Since AQK is our hero and remains so to the 99.99% people of this country till the judgment day…That’s it!!:coffee: His eventual political affiliation may be ichchy for sometime but it couldnot wash out his services to the nations in the longer run.

but the crux of the matter is, It’s very easy to side & support simultaneously with Musharraf as well as AQK on racial grounds which all MQM followers or Karchites people proudly perform ………….but politically & ethically they have to chose one amongst both as both are each other sworn enemies. Cany anyone state their reasoning of support to both other thant race??

Politically, doubt most will support either. As for Musharraf, his support in Karachi is pretty high because of the development in Karachi during that period. This made him and MQM popular. (Even though truthfully, MQM was the one who handled the funds instead of the usual corruption, they did something).
As for AQ Khan, we're proud of him since he made the atomic bomb. Nothing racial for support for either of them
