There were initial complaints about the condition of the athletes' village at the Commonwealth Games

A leading Commonwealth Games official has cast doubt on Delhi's ability to host the 2020 Olympics.

The possibility of launching a bid has been mooted by sports leaders in India. Olympic President Jacques Rogge indicated he would support the idea.

But Commonwealth Games Federation Chief Executive Mike Hooper said it might be too soon.

The Indian capital suffered a series setbacks in its preparations for this year's Commonwealth Games.

Widespread problems

The Games are one of the world's biggest multi-sports events.

But it did not stop International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge from suggesting the Indian capital had laid the foundations for an Olympic bid.

And despite the widespread problems, Indian sports leaders have frequently spoken of their desire to bring the Olympics to Delhi.

But Mr Hooper - whose job it was to monitor the city's preparations for the Commonwealth Games - advised them not to rush into things

"The reality is [that] in time I think they [will] have the capacity, [but] I think that would be a big ask of India at this time," he said.

India's reputation as organisers of such major sports events could suffer further damage when the results of an inquest into allegations of corruption surrounding the Commonwealth Games are revealed.

But there is a growing recognition that India, a country of 1.2 billion people, will one day stage the Olympics. It is one of the few market places the Olympics has not broken into.

And, as demonstrated at the Commonwealth Games in which India finished second in the medals table, its population has discovered and taken up sports other than cricket.

Do you actually think india will organize them without thing about ROI. Same was said before CWG but now benefits are coming out. If you are in delhi you can see them:cheers:

I think Lalit Modi will be a better organizer than Narendra Modi or Nitish Kimar.

do govt need to organize a international game to constuct every new flyover ?

do govt need a international game to constuct every new flyover ?

Actually its sad but the answer is yes. The mouting pressue is something which makes the people here actually work. You make flyover sit on it for 5 years no one cares no one even knows the deadline. Now when its olympics everyone knows the dead line.... and if you cross the deadline... well

An effective control from the govt from the beginning itself may have prevented the bad reputation attached to the games

Its not the organizing of the games which were in doldrum,it ran quite smoothly and effectively(after the govt intervention just days before the start),but it was the preparation

Remember we had already organized two world class events even before CWG at a time when we were not prosperous but have an effective manager the form of Indira Gandhi

Molawchai is the only guy on this forum who has so much obsession with India even for any other country.

This Molawchai guy is fake man... never seen a Thai behaving like this.

My opinion on the topic... lets hold off on the olympics... Lets bid for Asiad and make sure that is truly flawless (no controversies, no bad press, no corruptions)... once we do that we can have good confidence in the general population to represent the pride of our country.

I feel that we should not go for the Olympics at this time. Maybe we can organise the Olympics. But the issue here is that do we need the Olympics? I am sure the money to be spent on the Olympics can be put to better use. Infrastructure, agriculture, education, health are just a few of the sectors which would benefit hugely with fresh investments. Use the money to improve the quality of life in India.
